Storage beds once seemed like the orthopedic shoe of the design world—sensible, but not stylish. These days, some are so attractive that you may want one even if your bedroom is spacious. Ideal for small starter apartments, modern storage beds come in a range of designs from very basic with clean lines to more luxe, upholstered options.

Easily lift up your mattress (with hydraulics) to reveal tons of storage, perfect for stashing away extra pillows, blankets, seasonal items and more.

This clever bed at IKEA has both storage drawers beneath and additional storage shelves in the headboard to maximize the smallest of rooms (or for someone with plenty of room, but also plenty of stuff).

Available in black/brown or white, best for small rooms without side or foot-of-the-bed clearance. KEA also has released another version of the Malm bed with storage drawers that pull out for $314.

Our Previous Lists:

You wouldn't guess by the looks of this sleek bed that it's hiding an 56"w x 23"d storage compartment at its footboard.

If you're looking for a bed with a low environmental impact, Urbangreen's Urban Basics bed is built by local artisans and finished with toxin-free, low VOC stains and paints.

Made in North Carolina, I love the crisp upholstered look of the Marlo Bed, so the storage drawer at the footboard is just a huge plus to an already A+ bed.

Choose from three wood stains and six colors for the six powder-coated steel drawer that you can mix and match for a totally mod look.

If you lean more to the "warm industrial" side of design, you might want to consider C&B's Blair. With six side drawers, you basically eliminate the need for a dresser entirely.

Other Good Resources:

Four extra-large drawers (two on each side) make this Chesterfield bed not just stately and good looking, but totally practical, too.

The Buden Bed by Viesso is offered in natural, amber, chocolate or coffee bamboo wood with underbed and headboard storage.

With solid walnut (or oak) construction, the Matera bed might be a bit of a splurge, but it'll be a long-lasting purchase that's worth the investment.
