We like to leave for a trip with bags packed, plants watered and apartment spotless. But this can often mean a giant, inconvenient binge cleaning session the night before (or worse the morning of) departure.
The longer we plan to be gone the more urgent the sense that we must clean. And the bigger the tip we have planned, the more energy we've spent on the packing and laundry and planning than on the cleaning and maintenance of our apartment. And because it's just so much more pleasant to come home to clean sheets, a meal waiting for us in the freezer, and nothing sticking to the bottoms of our feet, we resort to binge cleaning.
But the binge cleaning can leave us overwhelmed and totally exhausted as we head out to our relaxing destination, somewhat reversing the relaxing effects.
Recently when we went to Palm Springs for the weekend we left a sink full of dirty dishes. Yes, we were horrified, but in a hurry (and trying to be spontaneous). Guess what, nothing bad happened. There were a few extra flies and it wasn't awesome to wash dishes on sunday night, but it actually did beat the binge. It was just one night so it was an easy risk to take, but we're considering ditching the binge altogether.
Do you binge? Do you just maintain a clean home all the time? Or do you let a little mess hang out while you go off and relax?
