BioBags: The 100% Compostable Solution
BioBags have been sweeping the “green market” pretty heavily over the last several years. They are 100% compostable and biodegradable and are safe to toss out in the trash, recycling bin or compost pile without worry that you’ll be doing harm to the eco-system. Though many of their products have high marks when it comes to reviews, we’re still a little on the fence.
Although we have sincere love and appreciation for technological advancements that allow for such a product to be made, we haven’t had the best of luck with BioBags in the past. We’re city dog owners who pick up after our pets several times a day, and although they do make pet waste bags, knowing we’re contributing that many to our landfill each day is a little frustrating. After picking up Bio Bags to put to the test, we have to say, they do their job — but maybe a little too well.
Some bags tore (but that can be the nature with thin bags intended for decomposition), but our biggest problem was the rate that they started the process. If you’re picking up after your pet in a designated waste area and immediately tossing the bag, then awesome. If you’re carrying it around on a 2 mile walk, then you might seek other options. Ours became slightly slimy and started leaking before we could make it to another suitable trash can.
They make products intended for use in the kitchen, yard, and more. They come in almost any size you might need around your home. Our solid advice is to use them for dry ingredients or in combination with a compost bin if used in the kitchen for scraps. We’re excited to see where this company progresses from here as it’s a good idea and there is a serious demand for bags of this nature. Although there are green alternatives to using a “plastic bag,” many would rather use one for matters of convenience and the sky is the limit as far as we’re concerned.
