How to Add Just a Touch of Bohemian Style to Your Outdoor Space

Spring is here, or almost here, depending on where you live, and it’s a great time to think about the design of your outdoor space. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of alfresco rooms that really embrace the bohemian vibe. Think assorted textiles, worn wood accents, and, of course, lots of plants. I love this look, and I love that it’s one that you can pull off, even in a smaller outdoor space. Let’s take a look at a few examples.

Why not treat your outdoor space like another living room that just happens to be outside? Sessùn’s founder Emma François home in Marseilles has plenty of colorful textiles, and accessories in the form of accent tables and potted plants.

On the covered porch of this Seattle home, plants and interesting textiles abound, including an African mudcloth cover on the sofa and a Turkish kilim on the floor.

Lucy from Fashion Me Now turned her small outdoor space into the perfect spot for a pint-sized bohemian garden party, with cushions, blankets and a few small tables scattered about. It looks like the perfect place to relax on a sunny afternoon, and the hanging lights makes it ideal for evenings, too.

If you have a little more space, you could create a dining setup like this one from Lonny, with lots of textiles and pillows for lounging. (Of course, you’ll want to make sure the fabrics are weather-resistant if you plan on leaving them outside.)

Here’s another lovely pattern-punched outdoor space, this one is of Estee Stanley’s home via Popsugar. Couches, outdoor throws and a low table are the perfect setting for a lazy afternoon.

This spot from The Everygirl defies traditional expectations of front porch style with tropical plants and a colorful kilim rug. The mix of textures makes the space particularly inviting.

This space from Ikea via House & Home has a great mix of textiles and plants, and makes use of its vertical space with hanging storage.

The tiny, colorful balcony of Carmen Dapena in Madrid, makes the most of a teensy space with a bistro table, cozy rug and a few plants. Bamboo stalks around the railing of the balcony adds privacy.

This little porch from The Glitter Guide is particularly inviting, thanks to benches covered in kilim cushions and a couple of rugs strewn about. The hanging plants add a majestic touch.
