Breaking the Mold: Decorating Outside the Norm

Breaking the Mold: Decorating Outside the Norm

The March issue of Living Etc. features the Paris home of Joséphine Gintzburger. Her incredible sense of style and personality shines through in every room and serves as a reminder that when decorating your home, the most important thing is to be yourself. When working on your space, its easy to unwittingly allow norms to dictate what you choose for one room or another. Tiles in the kitchen or bathroom only, artwork to anchor a space, choosing one bold element for each room...these are all guidelines that can be helpful, but they can also be restrictive.

That is why I love this apartment, the way that each room is designed with such individual perspective. The style of the artwork displayed in each room is unexpected. The kitchen has a large and attention grabbing work that one might typically put in a dining room, or a living room. In another room, artwork is hung above the door frame. The tile floor in the bedroom is more reminiscent of a kitchen or bathroom, while the bathroom's cement tub and color scheme are more common to an ultra modern kitchen or even garage. The bold colors and the sophisticated design elements are matched with a homey and casual feel in a unique and personal way.

Expressing your individual style and showing off your what is appealing to you is what is important. Be inspired to choose a decor that puts your own mix on display, be it modern with antique, minimalist with vibrant colors and prints, elegance with playfulness or all of the above.
