Brooke's Dining Alcove Turned Nursery

Name: Brooke (10 months)
Location: New York, NY

When my husband and I found out we were having a baby girl, I was very excited to begin decorating her room. I've always had my eye on feminine décor, but haven't been able to use it in other rooms in our apartment.

The challenge for us was that we had to create a room in our small, one bedroom apartment from nothing. We put a seamless pressurized wall that turned our dining alcove off the kitchen into Brooke's nursery. We decided on a glass French door to keep the space more open and allow light into the room. It also let us keep an eye on Brooke while she slept in the crib.

As an editor of interior design and fashion books, I felt pressure to create a nursery that was stylish and current. I love pink and always have, but I didn't want the room to feel too girly or overly babyish. That is a challenge, as much of the nursery décor on the market can feel traditional and overly feminine. Once we decided to paint the room gray and use pink as an accent color that opened the rest of the room up for a more modern feel.

The room we built had no closet or storage so we had to figure out a way to make the room functional in a tiny, newly created space. We designed the wall to go around the radiator, rather than straight over it to make space for a closet, which my husband built with materials from the container store. We were lucky that an extra set of plastic drawers we had lying around from Target fit perfectly in the space under the shelving, allowing for even more storage space.

The first pieces we bought were the crib and dresser. We originally were drawn to the pieces because they were made in the USA and had a modern sensibility to them. The original knobs on the dresser were round and didn't feel quite right, so we got these acrylic flower knobs at Home Depot and they changed the look and feel of the furniture set. I have always loved the bedding from Dwell Studio. I bought a few different sheets to be able to alternate the look and then I sent a picture of the patterns to Lindsay at Sugar Fresh on Etsy. She created the custom alphabet and number prints that picked up the color scheme and we framed them in high gloss lacquer frames at a frame shop near our apartment. I think they really tie the look of the room together. I wanted the space to feel personal, so I bought a few other prints and special books to display on shelves. Over the year since Brooke has been born, we've added to the shelves with special photos of her. I especially love the "B" frame I purchased from Pinhole Press.

At ten months, Brooke has just started to crawl and her favorite room to explore is her own. She loves to pull her books off the bookshelves that are easy for her to reach. And every morning when she wakes up she likes to pick up each animal that sits on top of the shelves to give them a good morning kiss. I'm thrilled that the space feels stylish, but is still cozy and personal so that Brooke truly feels at home in it.
