Name: Caitlin Murray & Caitlin McCarthy, interior designers and co-founders of Caitlin & Caitlin Design Co.
Location: Downtown Los Angeles, California
Size: 300 square feet
Years in business: 3 months

You may remember Caitlin Murray and Caitlin McCarthy from their personal house tours a while back. They are both interior designers and close friends, so when they decided that the corporate world wasn't the right fit for them, they partnered up to realize their dream of opening their own interior design business.

Their first project as a new business — tackle their own office space. Since they didn't have any big jobs yet money was very tight, so they had to make do with furnishings they already had and cute finds from the flea market. They were also under a tight deadline to get the space decorated so they could focus on getting their business off the ground and securing the first few clients.

From the looks of Caitlin & Caitlin's newly designed workspace, it looks like they are off to a great start. Wishing them the best of luck in securing their first client!

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style:
It can be described as a mesh of chic, modern and vintage elements infused with color, pattern and texture. We're drawn to design that feels layered, lush and lively.

It sort of just came together as a mix of pieces we already had and others we brought in one by one. The downtown backdrop definitely helps set an urban, industrial vibe.

Favorite Element:
We love the huge windows paired with the white paint and concrete because they create a clean, blank canvas. This neutral setting allows us to add any element we want, so the office continues to change and evolve.

Biggest Challenge:
It's a tiny space, so we had to be strategic about what we included. Editing was imperative in this case.

What Friends Say:
That it reflects our personalities — the bright, poppy colors match our gregarious, enthusiastic energy.

Biggest Embarrassment:
Sometimes it can get a bit chaotic… and messy!

Proudest DIY:
We would have to say the hand renderings we create — does that even count?

Biggest Indulgence:
Just having an office!

Best Advice:
Don't overthink it. A shared creative space is like a living organism. It's a reflection of our combined personal style, which is never stagnant.

Resources of Note:

We don't have any appliances in our office, except a Keurig coffee maker!

We have a big white gloss cabinet from Ikea that stores everything administrative. Functionality is key. We have two Panton chairs from Room Service and a wingback chair that was found at a garage sale! Our desk is a very basic modern white desk from Craigslist.

Flea market finds (Pasadena Rose Bowl, Fairfax, and Long Beach are our favorites), West Elm notepads, and miniature chairs from Japanese website reac JAPAN. Our sunburst mirror is from Two's Company.

The chandelier and lamp were poor abandoned pieces we rescued and gave a little TLC.

We love the old original concrete floors in the historic downtown LA building that our office is in.

The rug in our office is from West Elm.

Very simple roll shades.

Caitlin McCarthy did the paintings in our office.

Thanks, Caitlin & Caitlin!
