Living in a smallish apartment with a proportionally small kitchen we try to make practical choices about what cooking gadgets are worth having. But sometimes you have to toss good sense to the wind. What kid wouldn't love a cake-sicle now and then? Or giant ice cream cone cupcakes for a birthday?

The cake-sicle pan ($14) can be used for cake, cookies or brownies and lends itself to lots of fun decorating ideas. Why not also try something savory like a corn bread or even a veggie or meatloaf. Eating things on a stick always seems to make them more appealing and kid-friendly (which would explain the popularity of corn dogs).

The ice cream cone cupcake pan ($28) makes four rather large cupcakes and would delight any child. Or you could try actually baking cake in an ice cream cone. Chockylit of the Cupcake Bakeshop blog gives very good instructions for this method.
