Today, California has launched its Cash for Appliance program in an effort to encourage state residents to replace and recycle inefficient and outdated appliances (specifically washing machines, refrigerators and room/window air conditioners) with energy efficient ENERGY STAR appliances. Rebates will be available for purchases made between April 22nd and May 23rd so if new appliances were on your horizon, now might be the time to buy. More details are after the jump.
Through the California Cash for Appliances program, the California Energy Commission anticipates they will issue 300,000 rebates resulting in a proposed energy savings of 23.5 gigawatt hours (or 23.5 billion watts) per year!
Rebates are as follows: clothes washers (rebate $100), refrigerators (rebate $200), and room/window air conditioners (rebate $50). All California residents are eligible to apply for the rebates provided the following criteria are met:
• One must purchase an eligible appliance that meets the state's efficiency requirements.
• The purchased appliance must replace an existing, working appliance.
• The existing, working appliance must be recycled with a California Certified Recycler.
The program received its $35.2 million in funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Since funds are finite, the program is limited. Rebate applications will be accepted through June 25th, but purchases must have been made by May 23rd.
