By the time our little nugget (yes, we called him 'nugget' — we kept his name a secret from everyone) was born, it had been three years since we started trying for our first baby. After undergoing intensely difficult medical intervention, I was finally pregnant. Needless to say, we were overjoyed, and it didn't take me long to get started on the nursery.

It was very important to me to decorate it just the way I wanted, and I went into full gear once we learned our little nugget was a boy. The room doesn't have a theme, per se, other than the color scheme. I love color, and it was easy to pull it all together once I decided on soft yellow walls with accents of orange, teal and gray. I painted the dots on the walls with stencils, and hand-picked every (affordable) piece of decor.

Some personal touches include: several of my photographs (carnival and baseball-themed) framed and hung around the antique mirror from my childhood room, and the song quotes on the walls (we both love music and selected lyrics by Tom Petty and Mama Cass to display — one is a collage I made and framed, the other is the wall decal over the crib). I had also always wanted to hang color copies of children's book illustrations on the walls of my nursery, so I chose the cover of one of my favorite children's books,The Poky Little Puppy, and a classic Richard Scarry storybook (which belonged to my husband when he was a baby).

There are a lot of meaningful heirlooms in the room as well — the yellow leather chair and antique sideboard/changing table belonged to my husband's mother (she passed away in May of leukemia at just 60), the small cherry and marble table by the IKEA chair was from his grandparents' house, the bat and glove on the shelf, as well as many of the books, were my husband's when he was young, the baseball was his father's, and I have displayed a framed postcard of my father's hometown in Italy (he passed away in May 2008 of colon cancer at 61). And we'll soon have another meaningful addition to the room — a hand-knitted baby blanket from my sister.

We lucked out several times with much of the other art on the walls — five of them came from thrift stores for just a few dollars each! There are three original paintings, an adorable fabric t-rex picture, and a signed (really!) Picasso print from the 60's of a mother breastfeeding her child. I love bargain-hunting. :)

I feel it is a happy, relaxing room that should grow well with Calvin over the years, and it was an absolute delight to decorate. I hope he enjoys it as much as we do!
