Can I Hire Someone to Design My Closet (But NOT Sell Me a System)?

Q: My partner and I live in a one-bedroom co-op in and share a sizable but poorly designed closet that we want to redesign. We are having some other work done on our apartment soon and so plan to have our contractor do the closet then, too. Here's our problem: we'd like to hire a professional to help us design the closet layout, but our contractor is skilled enough to build and install any shelves, drawers, etc. In other words, we don't want to buy a "system" from someone; we just need help from someone who knows what works and what doesn't. Unfortunately, I've looked all over the internet and been unable to find someone who just does design and layout—everyone is selling a system or components. Does the type of person we want to hire actually exist? Sent by Charlotte

Editor: I hope you two get the closet of your dreams! Readers, how can this couple get the design help they need without getting trapped in some sort of closet component pyramid scheme? Are closet designer—either human or software—a thing?
