Cardboard As Weed Block

Cardboard As Weed Block

Last year, a neighbor told me that he used upwards of three layers of cardboard to tame the weeds in his yard. Plastic weed block is obviously on the non-green list so I finally decided to try out cardboard this year around our garden beds...

While this might not be the most elegant solution, it serves two purposes: blocks weeds and utilizes something that otherwise gets thrown out (recycled). I've seen another neighbor doing this but not only were they using cardboard, they had a piece of old carpet thrown down as well.

After putting down the cardboard and getting it wet, it does a pretty good job of keeping down the weeds. I'm adding pieces of cardboard as we have them to recycle. Eventually, I plan on putting a different material over the cardboard, such as gravel or mulch, but in the meantime, it keeps grass and weeds away from the perimeter of our vegetable garden.
