Case-Mate is definitely on the forefront of the iPhone case game. We recently wrote about their Create Your Own Case option, which is pretty genius! We know several people who have designed, ordered and now love their case. Now, Case-Mate is back at it, offering up something that their competitors haven't caught onto yet.
The Case-Mate Hug is a wireless charging system that uses a case and a pad. When the two meet, the charging begins.
The Case-Mate Hug Case is made from durable injection molded materials with hints of aluminum metal accents. It's a two piece, durable case that will fully protect your iPhone &mdash much like most of the Case-Mate cases.
The Case-Mate Hug pad connects to a power source through a DC adapter. Once the iPhone Case and the Pad meet, that's when the charging begins. Through a wireless magnetic field the power is transfered from pad to iPhone. An LED indicator illuminates when the phone connects with the pad and charging begins. Case-Mate is calling the charging process "green" because the "Hug draws power only to the level your device needs, then nothing more."
Case-Mate is also claiming this to be wireless charging and charging on the go, but, you need the pad in order to charge your phone. What's the difference in bringing the iPhone charger that you already own and bringing the Case-Mate Hug pad with you? You still have to plug them both in to get a charge. Case-Mate also says "Hug is based on the Wireless Power Consortium standard. This means that your Hug charging pad will always be compatible with new devices supporting the standard. This also means that your hug case will be compatible with everyday products (you bedside table, starbuck's coffee table, in the airplane etc) that support this universal standard." But how many bedside tables support that universal standard? Mine don't.
This is a fantastic idea, and we love the idea of wireless on the go charging, but unless every surface we set our phone down on can charge our phone &mdash this seems to generally be the same thing as any power mat or plug in the wall phone charger.
What do you think of the Case-Mate Hug?
