Attention, cat parents: PetListed has released a list of the most cat-friendly cities in the U.S. for the upcoming year. The American Veterinary Medical Association has estimated that over 31 million American households own cats—a number that has no doubt increased rapidly in light of the pet adoption boom during the coronavirus pandemic. With this data in mind, PetListed set out to determine the best cities for felines and their humans to live for 2021.

The pet company examined the 100 most populous American cities across four key indicators of feline friendliness: percentage of cat-friendly housing gathered in collaboration with national real estate website RentHop, amount of American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) certified cat veterinary practices, quantity of animal shelters and welfare groups, and number of pet stores on Yelp. Birmingham, Alabama thus came out as the most cat-friendly U.S. city for 2021.

The city received an A+ score: 81% of rental properties allow cats, and the city has an abundance of vets and shelters. Birmingham, Alabama is followed by Portland, Oregon; Madison, Wisconsin; Richmond, Virginia; Minneapolis, Minnesota; St. Louis, Missouri; Tampa and Orlando, Florida; Greensboro, North Carolina; and Denver, Colorado

At the very bottom of the list with D and F grade ratings are Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Fremont, California; Paradise, Nevada; Newark, New Jersey; New York, New York; Corpus Christi, Texas; Detroit, Michigan; and El Paso, Texas.
