Before you end up covered in grout or tangled in a roll of wiring, take a moment to ask, “Should I DIY, or should I hire?” and carefully weigh both options.

Project by: Negar of Space Harmony Location: Vancouver, Canada This is an interior design and renovation we did for a client, a professional and avid skier who wanted his 1600 three-level town house to feel like a chalet. Because of the space limitation and ceiling height, we couldn’t use the real bold and robust materials used in chalets so we created an “modern chalet” instead! Our goal was to create the same cozy and comfortable ambiance on a smaller scale.

This three-bedroom apartment in Tel Aviv used to be a neglected and gray apartment. You have to see it now!

How do you add color to a rental without painting? That was the challenge this client posed to Lisa of Olive Juice Designs. She responded by creating an inviting living room, perfect for entertaining, without pulling out a single paintbrush. From Lisa: A single apartment dweller in San Francisco contacted me to help her with her living room. She admitted that her apartment was lacking in many areas, and she was embarrassed to have friends over.

Project by: Jodie Rosen Design Location: Canada This is a big boy room for a 3-year-old boy, Dylan. The room is accessorized for a 3-year-old but as the child grows, the main pieces will remain age appropriate, and grow with him.This room started with the amazing fabric sourced from Tonic Living. From this jumping off point, we selected the Monte Design Toddler Dorma bed colours of charcoal with a navy pipe.

Project by: Britt F. Gage/For You, By Me Location: Queens, New York City Britt Gage was hired to bring some glamour to this space in anticipation of Felicity Adele’s arrival in the world. Her parents wanted something with personality and pizazz. Hmmm…how about a glitter wall? From the designer: It’s an interesting experience creating a room for someone who you haven’t met, or rather, hasn’t even been born yet.

Project by: Jenna Piccirillo of PICCISTUDIO Location: Fairfield, Connecticut This bedroom needed to house two growing pre-teen boys and provide space for them to sleep, study and hang out with friends. Jenna Piccirillo’s solution is the stuff kids’ dreams are made of and include a room-within-a-room treehouse.

Project by: Aparna Chacko / AjjC Design Location: Fremont, California This room needed an injection of personality before its new 10-year-old occupant moved in. It also needed a design that could carry this tween straight through the teen years. From the designer: Design brief: To convert the spare room into a space that the home owner’s 10-year-old daughter will not outgrow in the next 6-8 yrs.

Project by: Decorist Location: San Francisco The client, Kristen, had a great upholstered bed and a fantastic classic chair in her guest room, along with some ultra-vibrant apple green walls. While the bold color was a definite wow, it wasn’t exactly tranquil, which is what she was hoping for in this space, so it had to go. She went the makeover route in hope of ending up with a more pulled together, cohesive and welcoming room.

This condo hadn’t been renovated in 20-plus years. The owners called in Jessica Nicolls of Bungalow 56 to give it a fresh and open feel, worthy of its San Diego Bay views. From Jessica: We took down the obtrusive walls that enclosed the kitchen, updated the flooring and created custom built ins to maximize storage. Now this condo takes your breath away as you enter! For anyone who loves camping, the outdoors, or very cute design details, this Before & After of a young boy’s room is for you. The color palette and designs are young and fun, but will grow with the boy as he gets older. And the room features plenty of steal-able ideas and inspiration for folks of all ages! From designer Lia Griffith, of Lia Griffith Media: Creating a children’s bedroom design that won’t grow old in less than a year can be tricky.

Nathan Rittgarn doesn’t list the square footage in his professional project submission of this kitchen, located in a pre-war Brooklyn Heights one-bedroom apartment. But you can see from the before photos above, it’s not particularly expansive. Coupled with the fact that the apartment’s “entryway” dumps you right in front of this small space, and it’s clear this room needed an update not just for aesthetics, but for function, too.

Faced with an awkwardly shaped ceiling, Catherine and Bryan had to get creative and totally rethink the space of this bathroom. From Catherine: This bathroom was the only room in the house that needed some {major} love. It was the only bathroom on the second floor, and awkward was an understatement. Our biggest priorities when renovating the space were: 1. Ditch the tub and replace it with a shower that’s more comfortable to use (and prettier, of course!).

When updating a vintage home with a past, a designer has to carefully carry out a vision without erasing the past. Such was the case for this vintage home, located underneath the Hollywood sign in the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles and redesigned by Justin Krzyston with Stonehurst Construction. The circa-1950s home was happily lived in by the original owners until they had passed away.

Project by: Louise Bradberry of Cait’s Room Interiors Location: Johannesburg, South Africa Transformations aren’t always about knocking down walls or elaborate IKEA hacks. Sometimes they’re about looking at your space with new eyes and giving it a new purpose. Louise did just that for her clients. Wanting to supplement limited outdoor play space for their child, they tasked Louise with creating a play nook for their daughter in a corner of their living room.

Project by: Jessica Davis of Nest Studio Location: South Orange, New Jersey Jessica wanted to give her daughter’s room a new look, something age-appropriate but not overly precious or childish. A large room with good light, the possibilities were endless, but she settled on a rich color for the walls and timeless furniture that her daughter can grow with.

Peggy Wang, Buzzfeed’s founding editor, decided one day a few years ago she was ready to move out of tiny apartment living. “It was like a weird sudden existential outburst in my usual lazy put-everything-off-forever mindset,” she writes. When she purchased this 1100-square-foot home in Queens, it felt like the right fit. But boy it needed a face lift. She worked closely with White Arrow—Keren Richter and her husband Thomas Richter—to remodel this home.

Project by: Harmony Weihs/ Design Harmony Location: Sammamish, Washington We love a good stylish entryway, especially when it tells you something about the owners. Harmony created a stylish and personal space for her clients with a few well-chosen and significant items. From Harmony: Our client purchased a new construction home in a large planned community and wanted to stand out from his neighbors.

Project by: Charles Wachtel of CW Property Group Location: Bed Stuy — Brooklyn, New York I am a former entertainment attorney, now on a mission to make clear that a house “flip” does not need to be a four letter word. I treat each renovation as my own home, and to that end, I build spec houses that I hope introduce a level of quality in both the design and the execution that people are generally unaccustomed to seeing in a developer-built renovation.

While there isn’t anything inherently wrong with this “before” (it’s clean, it’s white, it’s rocking some fun cabinet hardware and additional storage), we’re saying it: it’s boring. This bathroom could be in just about any house in any part of America. The “after” though…well, we’re smitten (it features one of the most stunning floors seen in all our Before & Afters).

This is one of the most blank-slate, bare-bones Befores we’ve ever seen; it’s hard to imagine this garage becoming anything but a wide-open, loft-like space. But thanks to one interior designer with a vision—and a clear financial goal—this humble garage is about to be transformed into a hot vacation spot.

I love old houses, and I love a good Before and After, so I particularly love this story about a small-town Texas home that was lovingly and painstakingly restored. In Texas, where land is cheaper and new construction is common, many homeowners prefer building a brand-new house to dealing with the quirks of an old one. But one homeowner fell in love with a 1920s cottage in the small historical district of small-town Hillsboro, Texas, and became determined to bring it back to life.

It’s not a problem that many people have in New York, but this Tribeca apartment was almost too big. Sans furniture, the side-by-side living rooms seemed intimidating and cavernous. Plus, the unusual proportions of the space, with windows sitting almost on the floor, made furnishing it tricky. So the homeowners called in Homepolish designer Alec Holland, who transformed the space into a cozy family home, using tricks that anybody can utilitze in a room that feels just a little too large.
