This powder room boasts a pretty pedestal sink (that doesn’t offer much surface storage space), a nice big mirror in an interesting shape (but those faceted clips are less than ideal), and nice pale walls (though it’s that generic cream-beige). Oooh baby, this is so much nicer. The changes aren’t huge, but they’re so, so effective, especially considering they only cost about $100. The new bright white wall paint is such an improvement; this hue is amazing in bathrooms because it both looks extremely clean (even sterile, some would say), makes it painfully obvious when it’s not clean, and reflects light in an extremely flattering way. And black-and-white is always a chic palette for a bathroom—even better when wooden elements are added. Overall, Brittany Goldwyn of By Brittany Goldwyn has nailed this $100 makeover by being smart instead of spend-y.

The shelf brackets were all painted black to unify them with the new mirror from Target (no longer available), as was a light fixture above the mirror—check out By Brittany Goldwyn for more photos. The shelf above the sink is lovely to look at, but it’s also incredibly helpful: The sink itself simply doesn’t offer enough counter space to accommodate the necessary elements for hair styling or a serious skin-care regime. The black towel to the left is another example of using an affordable, practical element to unify decor.

Now it’s so much better! I really like having things like extra toilet paper, room spray, and a candle available, but I don’t like plonking them right on the back of the toilet. I have not remedied this situation in my own home, but Brittany has. The two baskets add attractive storage space for anything that doesn’t need to be displayed—Brittany uses them for diaper supplies, I might use them for sunscreen and bug spray. The plants add vitality.
