Some artists work in colored pencil, but Jennifer Maestre takes it to a whole new level. Her creative sculptures are completely constructed from the writing utensils.
Made from sections of pencils that are strung together, sewn, and sharpened, the otherworldly, organic shapes are reminiscent of everything from underwater life to alien flowers.
Maestre was originally inspired by the sea urchin, a creature that has protective spines and that is both "dangerous and beautiful." She says in her artist statement:
Pencils are common objects, here, these anonymous objects become the structure. There is true a fragility to the sometimes brutal aspect of the sculptures, vulnerability that is belied by the fearsome texture.
What a cool way to color outside the lines.
