Holiday Countdown: Free Printable DIY Advent Calendars

Like clockwork on the first of December when I was young, my mom would give my brother and I those cardboard advent calendars with the chocolate candies inside. Once we grew up and stopped getting them the whole tradition completely left my mind and hadn't returned until now...

As an adult it can be much harder to get excited about the holidays. They just don't hold that same magic and charm as they once did. So when I saw these advent calendars they brought me back to a time of carefree holiday delight. I love the idea of making a modern grown-up version of this childhood memory and bringing back the merriment of counting down to the big day.

One of the best things about them is that unlike the twelve days of Christmas, you don't have to get all stressed out about lining up leaping lords, drummers, or expensive jewelry for gifts; they are supposed to be small and inexpensive. It's more about the fun of the activity than what's inside. It's great to search out creative surprises to put inside each day: like a small gift, homemade candy, a note, or even an invitation to an outing, event or activity. Have fun with it.

Here are a few free DIY printable calendars that I found:

1. For this lovely calendar by Oh Happy Day you just need twenty-four 3x3 inch boxes, tape, scissors and the printouts.
2. Here is a magnetic calendar with a classic design by Twig & Thistle.
3. Talk Crafty To Me has created an advent calendar that doubles as tree ornaments.
4. Oh Happy Day also brings us these great calendar iron-ons to put on 24 little sacks.
5. This one by Makoodle also involves two inch favor tins, magnets, and a metal sheet.
