This morning I was finally attempting to organize the extremely messy photo files on my hard drive when I came across the images I took in Amsterdam a few years back. As I was transported from sitting in front of my computer desk back to the memories of that incredible trip I ran into images of The CitizenM Hotel and decided to check in on their site and see what they were up to …
I knew that the hotel was going to be expanding but didn't realize that it was going along much faster than I thought. They will be opening a New York City location in Times Square in 2012 and one in the Lower East Side in 2013.
The CitizenM Hotels are based around the idea of affordably luxury for "mobile citizens of the world". They started in Amsterdam and now have a hotel in Glasgow with expansions to America, London, China, Hong Kong, Milan, Paris and Zurich on the way.
The design of these Hotels is sleek and modern. You can easily play the "how many designers can you spot?" game while walking around the main common room area. And even though you are well aware of how much each piece of furniture costs in this lobby space, they make it completely inviting. They want you to use it as if it were your own living room.
The soundproof guest rooms are prefabricated modern pods that are minimal and comfortable with an open design. The rain shower and bathroom are visibly open in the center of the room, but you close a revolving wall around you when in use. And everything in the room is controlled by a touchscreen remote control or Moodpad. The Moodpad allows you to change the color of the lights, temperature, sound, etc. to your liking and includes different types of themes like 'romantic' or 'business'. It's kind of like your own little automated bachelor pad.
Staying at the CitizenM was on my Amsterdam 'to-do' list and I am really glad I got to check it off.
