This is the first house that my husband and I purchased together, so for that reason alone, it is very special to us. When we were looking for our first home, we knew that we wanted a fixer upper. The uglier the better in our minds. As long as the bones are good, we knew that anything cosmetic could be fixed. Before we stepped inside this house for the first time, the realtor told us that it was still on the market because, “It’s just so ugly.” That was music to our ears!

It was in its original 1962 condition when we bought it, including popcorn ceilings, old cabinetry, original carpet, mauve sinks and toilets, linoleum flooring, etc. I was so excited to be able to gut this house and finally be my own client [Casey runs her own business, Casey Mason Interiors]. Despite its antiquated appearance, I was immediately drawn to the copious amounts of natural light that floods this house both in the morning and afternoon. Natural light was on the very top of my wishlist when we were looking for a home. Honestly, if a house didn’t have good, bright natural light, there was no way we would buy it.

As soon as we moved in, we started checking things off of our to-do list. A new roof, new electrical, and new landscaping in the front yard were the first things we tackled. Next was scraping the popcorn ceilings, adding recessed lighting and removing the old built-ins in the bedrooms. Then, we moved on to our biggest project: removing the wall between the kitchen and living room and remodeling the kitchen. Lastly, we installed hardwood flooring throughout. The bathrooms still need to be remodeled, so we are saving up and hope to tackle those projects this year.

My Style: Clean California bohemian.

Inspiration: Textiles and nature.

Favorite Element: The wallpaper in my daughter Sunny’s room. Our daughter was just born this past January, and when we got pregnant, we decided to wait to find out the gender on the birth day. So, in designing a gender neutral nursery, I decided on this rusty-colored suns and sunsets patterned wallpaper. Our daughter was born five days past her due date, on a bright, sunny morning after a big rainstorm. The nurse commented that she was waiting for a sunny morning, which is why we named her Sunny. And, it ended up being a very happy coincidence that her wallpaper is suns and sunsets.

Biggest Challenge: Our biggest challenge was working with a budget (isn’t that everyone’s biggest challenge?). We don’t consider this home to be our forever home, so we are constantly weighing the pros and cons of a project and how much value it will add to the home.

Proudest DIY: The paneled wall in the master bedroom. Since most of the walls in our house are painted white, I knew I wanted to have a unique accent wall in our master bedroom. I loved the idea of tongue and groove, but we already did that treatment on our kitchen island, so I wanted to do something different. I found this pine lattice molding at home depot and knew it would be the perfect material to create a paneled wall. This project took my husband and I about two days to complete. I am so happy with the way it turned out!

Biggest Indulgence: Custom blackened steel range hood.
