We are thrilled to introduce our new series of closet tours with Rory Rockmore, who not only has the most exciting shoes in town, but also keeps his t-shirts in the most neatly organized, board-folded stack that you will ever find in a Los Angeles closet.
How do you organize your closet?
For me, keeping the closet organized starts with two majors keys. One is matching hangers - it doesn't matter if they're wooden, wire or plastic, if everything matches it's much easier to organize and KEEP organized. The second is board folding. When I was in high school working retail, I took pride in board folding shirts and denim without the board, a notion I carried into my adult life and closet.
What are the three things in your closet you wear the most often?
1) Lately I dress up a black or white t-shirt almost everyday.
2) Like everyone, I have a favorite pair of jeans. Mine are black coated denim from Marc Jacobs.
3) Going through a short sleeved button down phase at the moment.
How do you keep your closet from becoming crowded?
I keep my closet from becoming crowded by losing my mind occasionally and delivering a few trunk loads of attire to the Goodwill. As you grow, I think it's natural to let your wardrobe grow with you.
Do you have any unusual or inventive organizing conventions for the closet?
I like to hang as much as I can because it's a lot easier to navigate especially in a hurry. Also, as a product of every HGTV show I watched as a youngster, I'm really into things having "a place." So I try to keep as much shit as I can in a compartment, drawer, or box.
Describe your style.
I go through phases and my style goes through phases.
When I was younger I took a lot of fashion inspiration from rappers and back up dancers in music videos. Without things like Instagram, my inspiration feeds were minimal so I really took what I could get. Now I would say I'm mostly inspired by my friends and the people I surround myself with.
I think the best way to describe my style would be the love child of Peg Bundy and 2 Chainz named Danny Zuko.
How do you use your sense of style to express how you want to be in the world, and how you want to be perceived?
I'm a firm believer in 'clothes make the man.' I think it's important to dress in a way that's most comfortable to you, in order to present yourself effectively.
For me personally, I need to look like an adult, but an adult that likes to have a good time.
