Satoe Kawashima expresses her inner joy in patterns and pleats. And although she now has her own unique system for keeping her closet organized, it hasn't always been that way.
My closet used to be a huge mess. I couldn't find where things were, so I thought - maybe I'll organize by section. Sometimes tops can be buried with long dresses, so I decided to organize by the same family of clothing. Then - organize by color. I'm a very visual person - so once it's color coded, I'm motivated to keep it clean & organized. It saves the time looking for clothes. It's a time saver for me - like losing your keys.
How do you organize your closet?
I divide clothes by categories: a section for dresses, a section for tops, a section for skirts, a section for pants. Each category is organized by color from light to dark starting from the left (left being the most light color). Each clothing category is sequenced by the length of items. For example, the section for tops is the most left, then skirts, pants and finally dresses. I organized it this way because it flows nicely from left to right and I know where things are.
What are the three things in your closet you wear most often?
The three things I wear most often are a blue pleated skirt, Sacai's top and Comme de Garcon's button up A-line dress. I use the blue skirt often because I love the bright color of it which brings a pop to my outfit. I adore Sacai's top because it has a such a unique shape and color. I also use Comme de Garcon's A-line dress often because I can wear it as a dress and also as a jacket. Also, I can wear a skirt or a leggings with that dress which makes for fun layering.
How do you keep your closet from becoming crowded?
I do a closet purging twice a year. If I have items I have not worn more than once in 3 months, I donate them. Also, when I am not longer thrilled about an item or I do not get a happy feeling from the item, I donate it too.
How do you think about fashion?
I love fashion. It cheers me up and puts a smile on my face when I get beautiful clothes. And also, I enjoy putting clothes together in colorful and unique ways.
How do you use your sense of style to express how you want to be in the world, and how you want to be perceived?
I love colors and clothes that have structure. I wear things I gravitate toward. I never put a thought into how I want to be perceived when I put them together. I know I am done styling myself when I feel happy. :)
