We've always been impressed by integrated speakers. It's sort of like killing two birds with one stone, since you're getting an audio feature but in a hidden form. We're especially intrigued when those integrated speakers are in an every day, sort of mundane piece of furniture — the coffee table, like some of these designs below...
• Acoustable: A unique spin on the coffee table with integrated speakers design and it's certainly our favorite. Made from a polymer and mineral blend to take full advantage of the acoustics in both. There's a Stereo amplifier with USB/ipod interface as well as a remote control — plus, a built in pocket for remote control storage. No work on actual mass production, but feel free to email on their website for more information.
• Coffee Table With Speaker System and Dock: Designed by Mike Lonsdale, this coffee table is a serious work of art. It'll cost you about $1,200 but if you have that extra cash laying around, it just might be worth the investment. Made with Chestnut and Tatajuba, a dock was carved into the wood to conceal all cords and wires when not in use. You only ever know it's a dock when you remove the panel and plug your iPod in. There's a small plug at the bottom of one of the legs to connect to the power source.
There are DIY versions all over the web and it really got us thinking — is it better to combine a coffee table and dock into one or buy separately? Combining definitely saves space and creates a unique and interesting piece of furniture that is extremely useful. What do you think?
