Colin & Archer's Peaceful, Playful Blue Room

Location: Colin (5) & Archer (3)

Colin and Archer are very active little boys, so I wanted their bedroom to be a calming, restful place, yet full of colour (just like their little personalities). The challenge with this room was that the room was quite small and narrow, and it's a rental, so I couldn't make big changes.

I convinced the landlords to let us paint, and I think the wall colour (Restoration Hardware's Atmosphere Blue) is what takes the room from blah to boy-beautiful. My biggest inspiration has been Apartment Therapy! I've been a reader since it's earliest days (when I lived in a Boston studio). And the discerning eye could no doubt pick out a few ideas that appeared on AT's Kids Room tours over the years.

Most of the items in this room were picked up at Ikea (we are on a tight budget!), but my favourite pieces are the vintage or handmade things. The quilts on the boys' bunk beds were handmade by friends and family in my home state of Arkansas over 40 years ago. Yes, they get handled pretty roughly (and they get peed on, a lot), but I don't believe in shutting them away in a closet to be eaten by moths.

I made the bunting on the window and baskets, as well as the curtains (an Ikea hack that involved sewing a border onto the "Matilda" curtain—easy!). I don't store many toys in their bedroom because I want their bedroom to be a place of rest, but I keep a handful of things close-by: some art supplies, their dolls and stuffed animals. I make a lot of my children's toys, including the blond doll and the wand shown here. I'm especially fond of the papier mache rhino head above their dresser (Anthropologie), and the collection of Schleich animal figures and other decorative animals. I also love the collection of "brother portraits" that hang above the small bookshelf that were taken by a friend and me over the years.

Thanks, Sarah! Readers, say hi to Sarah at The Arkansas Traveler.
