Nicolette and Michael built their very own tiny house in 2018 in just seven months. And they've fit a lot in to just 300 square feet!

Name: Scott Duff, comic/radio host; Jerre Dye, playwright/opera librettist/actor/director, and dog Emmett Location: West Edgewater — Chicago, Illinois Size: 1,350 square feet Years lived in: 8 months; Owned Scott and Jerre’s Chicago loft is just…WOW! It is more dramatic and inspiring than any home you’ve probably seen in a while.

Sruthi and Gautam sought to create a cozy home with "come sit here and chill" vibes, something that would fit their family's personality.

Clever, retro-industrial style mixes with the picturesque Gothic style of this late 19th century row house that was converted into apartments.

In this home, building materials are left visible so they can be touched and age gracefully with use.

Bert is a history buff and graphic designer, and actively supports artists by collecting their wares. He shares his cool condo with pups Biscuit and Ms. Millie Nelson.

Name: Jar and Kay (and their 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter) Location: Quezon City, Philippines Size: 375 square meters Years lived in: Owned 3 months Jar writes: “This is my wife and I’s first house together. We worked closely with our architect [Denise De Castro of DDC-Vida] to achieve a sustainable structure that would cater to a growing family. We were able to incorporate a lot of natural light and ventilation with a pocket garden in the middle of the home.

Plant stylist, interior designer, artist, filmmaker, and author Hilton Carter shows us around his plant-filled industrial jungle loft home in Baltimore.

Much of the items in this industrial Brooklyn loft were found on the side of the road, the Craiglist free section, or this building's "freeshelf."

As a self-described "sensory driven guy," Gil's space isn't just pretty to look at. A mix of textures and materials blend beautifully to stimulate all the senses.

Years lived in: Owned 2 Years This urban dwelling is the first New York City apartment purchase made proudly by business service manager, Caryn Wallace. It’s located in Alphabet City, a neighborhood in Manhattan’s crowded East Village.

Kicker and Anne Kalozdi designed and built this house made out of shipping containers... despite having no real experience building a house before!

Name: Girolamo and Alex Location: Dogpatch — San Francisco, California Size: 871 square feet (1,200 square feet including the coffee shop) Years lived in: 7 years; Owned Very few people can roll out of bed and be at work in just a few steps. For Girolamo and Alex, getting to their coffee shop—La Stazione Coffee and Wine Bar—is just a quick commute down a spiral staircase.

Name: Adrienne Moran Location: West Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Size: 968 square feet Years lived in: Owned 2 years Adrienne’s sweet apartment is in an old biscuit/cookie warehouse in the inner suburb of West Melbourne, not far from the city. While many warehouse developments lose a sense of history when sliced up in the design process — this block of apartments thankfully retained the beautiful original wooden floors and beams.

Location: Inner North of Melbourne, Australia Size: 190 square meters internally Years lived in: Owned, almost 3 years Dan and Bianca bought their home almost three years ago when it was a completely different house. I used to live next door — so I have watched them tirelessly transform their home over the last two and a half years, with not one but then two small children in tow! Their perseverance deserves a serious round of applause.

Name: Jesse and Cali Green Location: New Center — Detroit, Michigan Size: 980 square feet Years lived in: Rented 1.5 years Jesse and Cali’s apartment building is inspiring, not only because they’ve created a beautiful modern and minimal home without splurging, but because of its deep history in Detroit. The building opened in 1926 as a home to graphic artists working in all of the nearby industries, General Motors in particular.

Name: Jill and Warren Location: Roncesvalles — Toronto Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: Renting 4 months As soon as Jill and Warren stepped into their new loft, they were sold! Moving from a newer condo in the downtown core, this space – with a good story and some history behind it – really appealed to them. Initially from the West End, Jill knew the charm of the neighborhood and has now introduced Warren to a new part of the city.

Name: Vicki and Ross Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Years lived in: 8 years, owned Vicki and Ross moved into their home in the inner-city suburb of Carlton eight years ago. Their building was originally part of an adjoining hotel — and it housed a hand ball court sitting in the back. (The first Inter-colonial Hand Ball Competition was played there against New South Wales, in fact!) You can still see some of the original paint markings on the walls in their gorgeous courtyard.

Name: Philip, Amanda, Jasper and Boogers the cat Location: Downtown Nashville, Tenneessee Size: 1,400 Square Feet Years lived in: Own- 3 Years Constructed in the 1800s and the oldest building on the block, it was love at first sight when Philip, Amanda and Jasper moved to Nashville about three years ago. The Knoxville natives wanted all the perks of downtown living: the luxury of walking to work or to restaurants and stores, just steps away from their front door.

Name: Kota Kobayashi Location: Clinton Hill — Brooklyn, New York Size: 575 square feet Years lived in: Owned 2.5 years Kota’s grandfather’s life hobby was Bonsai, the Japanese art of growing trees in containers. From him, Kota’s mother got a passion for gardening. Not surprisingly, Kota has a love of plants, as well. “The fondness for the green is in my blood. I could not help myself but to be surrounded by plants.

Name: Hetty Webbink, her son Noah and daughter Luna, Jip the cat Location: Deurne, the Netherlands Size: 1,431 square feet Years lived in: 6 years, owned Although she was trained as a nurse, interiors and styling have always been in Hetty’s blood; she’s even had a subscription to vtwonen (the most popular interior magazine in the Netherlands) since she was 19. So it comes as no surprise that Hetty would eventually find her way to a career that involves home decor and styling.

Name: Darcy Young & Mike Putizger with dog Moose Location: West Town — Chicago, Illinois Size: 1,000 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, owned When Darcy and Mike arrived at a building in the West Town neighborhood of Chicago for a condo showing two years ago, another unit owner in the building happened to be moving out at the same time. The door was open and they popped their heads in.

Name: Kalyn and Todd Chandler Location: Tribeca — New York, NY Size: 1,700 square feet Years lived in: 10 years, owned When Kalyn moved into her now-husband Todd’s apartment, the two were practicing lawyers. Kalyn was unhappy with her busy career, so Todd encouraged her to pursue her passion for design. With that extra push, Kalyn’s brand Effie’s Paper—a fun and feminine stationery and gift company — was born.

He's a programmer; she's a designer. And they both live and work in this big and bright LA loft.

Name: Ashley Chu and Alex Acker Location: Beixinqiao — Beijing, China Size: 950 square feet Years lived in: 3.5 years, renting Beijing is famous for its centuries-old hutongs — the winding alleyways that once made up the main arteries of the city. They were filled with traditional courtyard homes until the spaces were divided or destroyed to make room for a swelling population.

Name: Anina, Deon and their daughter Marguerite Location: Bellville — Cape Town, South Africa Size: 3,229 square feet Years lived in: 6 years, owned From the outside Anina and Deon’s home still tells tales of its ’80s heritage. It was the location and view that initially attracted them to the house, and certainly not the interior, which was old fashioned.

Name: Gretchen and Kevin Location: Detroit, Michigan Size: 2,200 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned After spending four years in 800 square feet in New York City, Kevin and Gretchen were able to design their dream loft back in their home state of Michigan. They found a space in an old, industrial building in a mixed-use neighborhood that’s lively and vibrant.

Name: Nicole Martinez and Ian Phipps Location: Williamsburg — Brooklyn, New York Size: 1,000 square feet Years lived in: 2.5 years, renting The word “loft” gets thrown about a bit these days, but Nicole and Ian’s apartment in Williamsburg is the real thing—an old factory building with soaring ceilings, exposed concrete floors, and genuine industrial character.

And pup Madden Location: Milton — Ontario Canada Size: 2,100 square feet Years Lived In: 12 years, owned “I believe that a home is not just a playground for living but also a composition of all who live there. I love walking into a space that has a story in the design; preferably a personal story,” wrote landscape designer and artist (@c’estjulien) Julien Marit.

Name: Sandy and Mike Location: Downtown — Los Angeles, California Size: 970 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, renting The Santee Building in downtown Los Angeles was granted historic landmark status in 2001. The former textile factory-turned-modern loft building is now home to Sandy and her fiancé Mike; they’ve lived here for about two years with their friendly labsky (labrador husky mix) Bowie.

Name: Anastasia Antoinette and Jamon Johnson Location: Columbia Heights — Washington, DC Size: 825 square feet Years lived in: 4 years, rented It’s not every day that you’re in the market for a new apartment and stumble upon an architectural masterpiece — which also happens to align perfectly with your profession — but that’s exactly what happened to Anastasia and Jamon when they were looking for their first home together.

Name: Jeff and Sara Jones and their two dogs Location: Waco, Texas Size: 400 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned You may recognize this couple from season three of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. After living in their Fixer Upper home for over a year, Sara decided to go back to school for nutrition…and it forced the couple to get creative with their finances.

Name: Cassandra Hope, Ryan and Penelope Location: Leslieville — Toronto, Canada Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, renting Cassandra grew up loving furniture and design, a passion sparked by her mom who always had one-of-a-kind pieces that were warm, cozy and felt like they were from another era.

Name: Curry Hackett Location: Howard University/Shaw — Washington, D.C. Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: Renting, 1.5 years The apartment that Curry has lived in for one and a half years couldn’t be anymore perfect for his diverse pursuits, which include graphic design, vintage furniture collecting, and playing the trombone. He’s also the founder of Hackreative, a multidisciplinary design studio specializing in placemaking, visual design, and creative direction.

Name: Irma and Robert and three kids Location: Cerdanya, Spain Size: 2,691 square feet Years lived in: 9 years, owned With tall ceilings, incredible art pieces and sweeping views of the Pyrenees mountains, this house charms everyone that walks in. But it didn’t always look this way. It might be hard to imagine cows ever being in this living room, but while this is a modern architectural structure now, it used to be a barn! The beautiful original wooden ceiling beams give it away.

Name: Carles Ruiz Carrión Location: Barcelona, Spain Size: 1,184 square feet Years lived in: 4 years, renting While sharing the place you live with the place you work might sound exhausting, for interior designer Carles Ruiz Carrión, it’s a perfect match. When he was looking for a space to run his design business out of four years ago, he spent a year searching for just the right spot.

Amanda runs her business Baguette & Butter out of their home, and Guillermo is Chef de Cuisine at the popular Logan Square restaurant, Mi Tocaya.

Name: Dawn Sweitzer of Notre Monde Location: High Point, North Carolina Years working in: 5 years, owned Dawn Sweitzer is the artist behind Notre Monde, a brand known for textiles, furniture, and accessories like trays, art, mirrors, and more. Her designs are distinct, as well as modern, minimal, and a little bohemian, too.

Name: Lysa Jordan, Sergio Castano and dog Walter Location: Montreal, Quebec Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: 6 months, renting Artist Lysa Jordan and architect Sergio Castano live with their dog Walter in a working and living loft nestled in the Saint Henri neighborhood. Quite unconventional from typical Montreal apartments, their pad is a modern, minimal, and creative space for both of them. “It’s a stimulating and inspiring place.

What do you do with a white walls, brick, and cold concrete: Add lots of color! Holly Conrad's studio loft in the heart of Chicago is refreshing and full of vibrant colors.

From above, gray metal starkly contrasts with the lush green trees surrounding the instantly recognizable shape. But Bruce Campbell’s airplane nestled in the forests of Oregon isn’t just a monument to humankind’s feats of engineering and mastery of aerodynamics… it’s his home.

Name: Freddie Chavda and pups Location: Bushwick — Brooklyn, New York Size: Somewhere between 850 – 1,000 square feet Years Lived In: 1 year, renting Freddie’s Bushwick loft is a perfect example of taking a raw, industrial space and turning it into a home. But rather than just filling it with newly purchased furniture, he both thrifted and found elements to add warmth to his home… as well as custom built many of the elements in the home.

Name: Emily and Kevin Location: Reston, Virginia Size: 2,800 square feet Years Lived In: 1.5 years, owned This was the fifth house we put an offer on and we went into it thinking, “What’s the worst thing that can happen? We actually get the house?” Then we got it. We liked the lot, the yard, and… that’s about it. But we knew we wanted a house that we could gut and renovate, so this definitely fit the bill.

Name: Julian Thomas Location: Bushwick — Brooklyn, New York Size: 700 square feet Years Lived In: Less than a year, renting “Who needs TV when you have Bushwick? This is live entertainment at its finest,” remarks 28-year-old self-proclaimed bachelor Julian Thomas as he looks out of a window of his Brooklyn loft in this video tour he posted on YouTube. His 1,000-square-foot home might be right next to a train—but that’s part of the city-life charm the space has.

Name: Yamine Gluchow Location: Downtown Montreal Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 1 year From an Eastern European family, Yamine Gluchow moved into his very own apartment just over a year ago. For him, living on his own is an extremely liberating experience. You’ll never feel as comfortable, nor will you ever have as much control over the decor, as when you live alone. Being surrounded by vintage finds, wood and art makes him as happy as he gets.

Name: Danny and Joni Location: Williamsburg —Brooklyn, New York Size: 690 square feet Years lived in: 3.5 years How do you make 690 square feet feel absolutely enormous? Add tall ceilings, lots and lots of windows, and some clever DIY storage solutions. Danny and Joni have come up with plenty of creative solutions for living in an apartment that is essentially just a single room — and that only has one closet, which also houses the water heater.

Name: David Brown Location: Lower Eastside — Santa Barbara, California Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: 5 years; Owned The concrete floor—now honed to perfection—and the roll-up door are the only indications that David’s light and bright studio was formerly a garage. With the help of a skillful design team and an able contractor, David transformed the garage into a studio that epitomizes simple indoor/outdoor living.

Name: Sam Location: West Village; New York City Size: 300 square feet Years lived in: 1 Year; Rented Keeping her home clear of clutter and displaying only the things she loves gives Sam’s 300-square-foot home in the West Village a spacious feel. Meanwhile, light from the many windows, pops of color, and the warm, neutral tones of her decor go a long way towards making it feel welcoming, comfortable, and soothing.

Name: Cat and Alex Location: Downtown; Los Angeles, California Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 2 years; Rented Cat Li is in the business of fashion, and she doesn’t leave her keen sense of style at the office. Her open and airy fifth floor loft is situated in the center of the bustling city and feels effortlessly cool. Minimal yet striking decor in a cohesive palette of blacks, whites, and metals makes bold pieces feel sophisticated yet casual.

Name: Katy Mason and Devin Hampton and their dog, Ace Location: Washington, D.C. Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 1 year; Rented With its loft-like essence, exposed brick, and beautifully industrial structural elements, this apartment has felt like home for Katy and Devin since day one. Having lived in D.C. for six years, Devin moved from one side of the wall (the apartment next door) to the other when Katy moved from NYC to D.C. last year.

Name: Emily and Colin and their dog, Scruffy Location: Greenwood Heights/South Slope — Brooklyn, NY Size: 1000 square feet Years Lived In: Colin for 4, Emily for 2; Rented One day, a little over four years ago, after always being attracted to a particular building’s rugged facade, Colin took a chance and rang the superintendent’s doorbell. As fate would have it, one of the lofts was vacant and Colin immediately took it!

Name: Noah Hollander Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota Size: 958 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; Owned When a friend suggested I check out Noah’s space, all I had to hear was “historic Cream of Wheat factory,” “huge vinyl collection on display,” and “striped wall” and I was sold! Noah’s apartment in an industrial area of northeast Minneapolis certainly didn’t disappoint.

Name: Grant Devine Location: Fort Point — Boston, Massachusetts Size: 350 square feet Years lived in: 2 years; Rented On the way up from the trendy lobby in Grant’s building—a recently converted shoe factory in the rapidly developing Fort Point neighborhood—he tells me that a year ago it would have been unimaginable to invite a photographer into his home. He explains that in his first year here, he did little more than move in the essentials.

Name: Laura Hyman Location: Santa Fe; Oakland, California Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; Rented When Laura’s sister described her Oakland loft’s style as “feminine industrial,” Laura thought it was spot on. The bright and spacious live-work loft utilizes cool and tranquil colors that add an overall warmth to a huge space that can easily feel cold and sterile.

Name: Mekiel Nuñez and Saadiq Vaughan Location: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 1 year The stereotypical New Yorker’s wardrobe consists unapologetically of black, greys, neutrals, and denims. Perhaps the overabundance of visual stimulation in our surroundings is why we prefer our clothes understated.

Name: Maria, Boris, and a dog named Fish Location: Fashion District, Downtown Los Angeles Size: 1500 square feet Years lived in: Rent for 1 year Maria and her boyfriend Boris share a sunny, industrial loft in the Fashion District of Downtown Los Angeles. A large and open space, the couple had to create rooms in a floor plan without many existing walls or distinct areas. They combined styles to craft cozy hangout spots all over the beautiful apartment.

Name: Ana, Ximo and Blas Location: Valencia, Spain Size: 936 square feet Years lived in: Owned 2 years Anna is a social educator and Ximo works at a shipping company, and together they share this charming historic home in Valencia’s shopping district. They fell in love at first sight with this home, but some work was needed. It was dark and had no sense space, with lots of tiny rooms and a really low ceiling.

Name: Dave and Mollie Code Location: West Loop — Chicago, Illinois Size: 2,300 square feet Years lived in: 1 years Tall ceilings, brick walls, sleek surfaces—this raw, industrial-style space is the home of Dave and Mollie Code. They run Studio Code together, a development firm based in Chicago with the goal of restoring the historic elements of homes while also creating functioning spaces.

Mollie and Dave’s condo features lovely bleached wood floors, mile-high ceilings, enviable original wood features, and breathtaking views of Chicago. They’ve filled their home with comfortable, industrial-friendly pieces that enhance their living space without distracting from its inherent charms. Click through to shop the style!

Name: Chloe Gard and Joel Dwine Location: Brisbane, Australia Size: A cottage and backyard studio Years Lived In: Renting for 1.5 years Chloe and Joel’s home looks like a simple old timber cottage just on the Southside of Brisbane city. But if you take a look inside, you will find a quirky and nontraditional extension done by an architect, complete with a built-in attic-bedroom, corrugated iron walls and old French doors as windows.

Name: Natasha Location: Griffintown — Montréal, Canada Size: 450 square feet Years lived in: Owned one year Filled with an abundance of natural light that reflects beautifully on her brightly decorated space, Natasha’s 450 square foot condo feels like anything but the “little city shoebox” she describes it as. Her choice of white walls and light-toned furniture contrast the dark wood floors and cabinets, giving the space a crisp, classic appeal.

Name: Gabriela Goff and Jeffrey Goff Jr. Location: Rochester, New York Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 5 years This unique apartment is the home of Gabriella Goff and her brother Jeffrey Goff Jr. It’s located in the basement of the sculpture studio of Paul and Christine Knoblauch, who designed and refurbished the space five years ago. It’s a home full of original art — from the sofa to the tables to the walls.
