Before & After: A Brooklyn Kitchen Opens Up
Dating in New York is notoriously brutal, and so is buying real estate, which lends itself to a robust market for fixer-uppers. After living for six years in a rented apartment in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights neighborhood, Jill and Aaron were ready to buy — but everything they could find in their desired neighborhoods, within their price range, was less than appealing.

Before & After: Smart Choices for a Small Kitchen
One of the biggest challenges of living in a tiny apartment is the tiny kitchen. After purchasing her studio apartment in Brooklyn, Kelly was determined to create her dream kitchen from what was originally a less than dreamy space. Although square footage was limited, lots of smart choices resulted in a kitchen that’s colorful, beautiful, and has the functionality of a kitchen many times its size.

Before & After: A Dated Bathroom Gets a Modern Renovation (& More Storage)
Jill and Aaron hunted for six months for their dream home in Brooklyn — during which time they realized their dream home was probably a bit out of reach. After being outbid on two different apartments, they finally landed a contract on a promising one-bedroom that was in need of just a little work. One problem spot? The apartment’s bathroom, which dated back to 1960 and had fifty years of wear to show for it. Another issue?

This gorgeous and swanky townhouse on Charles Street in the West Village happens to have a Hollywood connection. Can you guess? (Okay, it was previously owned by Hilary Swank.) Before & After: A Colorful Update for a Cluttered Kitchen
Prior to the renovation, Cybele described the kitchen in her Park Slope apartment as “Functional, but…a little worn”. It was still getting the job done, but the kitchen had seen better days. There were giant holes in the walls behind the cabinets, the electrical was outdated, and a dark countertop and backsplash sucked the light out of the room. The mosaic tile floor, with its miles and miles of grout, was a nightmare to clean.

Finding an affordable rental anywhere in New York City is a struggle, so it may feel like buying a home in the Big Apple for less than a fortune is near-impossible, if not completely. The truth is, you can find apartments in the city that are more on the affordable side, you just have to do a bit of searching to find them. These apartments are all $300,000 (or just below in price) and give you a taste of what’s out there and what buying in New York City is really like.

Before & After: A Little Change Makes a Big Difference in a Small Studio
Sometimes, when you’re dealing with a little space, all it takes is a small change to make a big difference. When Lauren bought her Brooklyn Heights studio, it had just one small closet in the bed nook — but there was a large home office in the living room. The bed rested on a platform with storage underneath, but the storage underneath was only accessible from a trapdoor directly underneath the bed (and who wants to move the whole bed to get to their seasonal storage?).

Before & After: A Dark ’80s Bathroom Brightens Up
Lots of New York apartments come with charming vintage bathrooms. Not this one. The bathroom of Heather and Doug’s Park Slope condo, true to its roots in the ’80s, had dark, dour maroon tile on the walls and grungy white tile (with grungy white grout) on the floor. The homeowners, with a view to selling the apartment in the next few years, wanted a bathroom remodel that would make their space brighter and more pleasant, and appeal to potential buyers as well.

Before & After: A Dark, Decrepit Kitchen Gets Resale Ready
Knowing there would be a move at some point in the future, Heather and Doug had resolved not to remodel the less-than-attractive vintage 1980s kitchen of their Park Slope condo. But that was before the cabinets and appliances started to give out. With duct tape holding together the shelves in their fridge, Heather and Doug were faced with a challenge: creating, with budget in mind, a new kitchen that they would be happy with and that future buyers would be happy with, too.

Before & After: A Classic Kitchen Update 40 Years in the Making
I’ve heard it said that it’s helpful to live in your home before renovating, to get a feel for how you actually use the space and what you really want from the renovation. Well, this Upper East Side homeowner lived in his apartment for 40 years. So he had a pretty good idea. What he did want: A fresh new kitchen, but one whose traditional feel would integrate seamlessly with the rest of the apartment. What he didn’t want: a completely open-concept kitchen.

Before & After: A Teeny-Tiny Kitchen Gets Some Serious Style
One of the fun things about working at Apartment Therapy is seeing how much potential there is in even the smallest of spaces. At 25 square feet, this barely-there kitchen is, I think, the smallest kitchen we’ve ever featured in a Before & After — which makes the end results even more impressive. A home with a 25 square-foot kitchen might sound a little insane to people from anywhere else, but in New York, you take what you can get.

A Brooklyn Apartment With a Drool-Worthy Backyard
Name: Rachel & Russell Location: Boerum Hill —Brooklyn, New York We’ve lived in our amazing apartment in Brooklyn for almost 3 years now. I spent countless hours arranging a mix of purchased, made (e.g. the RIOT painting and wood/metal plant stand), and found (e.g. our vintage typewriter and metal stool) objects into the decor we live with today. Of course there are things I wish I had done differently, but overall I think I did a great job maximizing the beauty of our space.

15 Free Things for Art and Design Lovers to Do in NYC
If you live in New York, you don’t need another reminder of how outrageously expensive this city is. But while rent, down payments on a house and living costs are undeniably high, Manhattan and its boroughs attempt to make it up to us by being rich in plenty of 100% free-to-enjoy art, culture and design. Before & After: A Modern Update for a Brooklyn Bathroom
Remember Sophia and Leon’s Manhattan apartment? Last week we witnessed the transformation of their kitchen, and this week we’re looking at the overhaul of the unit’s main bathroom. While the old bathroom wasn’t yet completely falling apart, it had poorly installed, mismatched fixtures — and the fact that it needed to serve for three people meant extra storage space would be welcome.

Before & After: A Dingy Brooklyn Kitchen Brightens Up
Prior to their renovation, Laura and Matthew’s kitchen had a few problems common to lots of NYC apartments: a tiny footprint, not enough storage space, and cabinets caked with years’ and years’ worth of paint. As you can see, the cabinets in their galley kitchen had taken on an unusual texture, and the oven was positioned about 18 inches from the opposite countertop. Definitely time for a change.

It’s Complicated: New Yorkers Weigh In on the Realities of NYC Real Estate
Recently, we shared a study that reported the minimum salary you’d need to buy a home in a bunch of cities—New York included. Unsurprisingly, our readers had a lot to say about the subject. Let’s take a closer look at how New Yorkers are reacting to the real estate market in the Big Apple. The mortgage lender that released the study, HSH.com, concluded that the salary needed to buy in New York was $86,215, based on the median home price of $395,400.

Before & After: A New Look for a “Sunburn-Striped” Bathroom
There were some great things that happened, design-wise, in the 70s, but this bathroom was not one of them. Molly and Jonathan had a few projects in mind when they purchased their Ditmas Park one-bedroom, but they knew that the “sunburn-colored” stripes in their bathroom needed to be the first thing to go. The problems with the bathroom went beyond the cosmetic.

Before & After: Casey & Kumar’s Clinton Hill Kitchen
When they bought their co-op apartment in Brooklyn, Casey and Kumar had a particularly ambitious project in mind: transforming a one-bedroom to meet the needs of a family of four people. Doing so involved some pretty clever solutions along with a full-scale overhaul of the unit’s very small, very outdated kitchen. Since space in their small apartment was at a premium, Casey and Kumar wanted the kitchen to flow seamlessly into the rest of the living area.

What Does a Million Dollar Apartment in NYC Look Like?
To many of us, a million dollar home sounds like it should be the lap of luxury: marble tubs, game room, wine cellar, perhaps a private pool. But, a million dollars doesn’t go quite as far down amenities lane in New York City. So what does a million bucks buy you in Gotham? Here are ten apartments around the million dollar mark and currently on the market. This loft one-bedroom in Chelsea boasts a very large living room with a gorgeous wall of windows.

Before & After: New Life for a Crumbling Clinton Hill Bathroom
While not lacking in a certain crumbly charm, the bathroom in Colin and Orli’s Crown Heights co-op was definitely not a place where you would want to take a bath. Five different layers of floor tiles, installed on top of each other over the years, made for an unsettling drop when stepping into the tub. The subway tile walls were starting to look far too much like an actual subway for comfort, and thanks to many decades of water damage, the whole thing was falling apart.

Before & After: Smart Updates for a Generic Kitchen
Here’s a thing that’s bound to happen when you’re house shopping: you see a place where the previous owner has replaced the kitchen (or bathroom), ostensibly as a selling point, but the new kitchen or bathroom already looks incredibly dated. It’s especially frustrating if you really like the place otherwise, because then you find yourself in the position of either living with a kitchen that you really don’t like, or ripping out one that’s brand-new.

I work and live in this space, so there’s a big dining room table that me and my team work on during the day and then use for dinner parties in the evenings! We can seat up to 20 people, believe it or not!

Fast forward 2 1/2 years later, my appreciation and impression of our apartment is continually evolving.

The main reason we were looking to move is because I was starting my business and planning to work from home, like my husband. We needed a home with enough rooms to house both of our work spaces.
