Alex’s “Boutique Hotel” Inspired Studio
Name: Alex Location: Hell’s Kitchen – New York, New York My studio is a big, modern space in Hell’s Kitchen. My friend recommended that I decorate my place like a boutique hotel room. That became the blueprint the my whole style. I created a bedroom area with a Gus Modern wingback bed and a great print of an Airstream. A half rectangle, grey bookshelf separates the living room area without blocking the sight lines to the window.

A History of New Yorkers’ Love/Hate Relationship with the Fire Escape
They’re a refreshing escape. They’re a terrifying safety hazard. They’re an eyesore. They’re a beloved part of the urban fabric. For as long as there have been fire escapes, there have been mixed opinions about fire escapes. The zigzagging metal stairs that many people associate so closely with the look of New York first started to appear in 1860, when a revision to the state code required buildings to have them.

Ken’s Eclectic Red Hook Retreat
Location: Brooklyn, New York I live in Red Hook, Brooklyn. I have been in this apartment for 4 years. It is a small 2 bedroom apartment with a really good sized back yard. I live here with my 10 year old Golden Retriever, Duke. The negative of being on the ground floor in a flood zone is that I was flooded during Sandy. I have since re-built and am happy to be back! My style is modern & eclectic. I am an avid thrift store, flea market and craigslist shopper. I love mixing styles and patterns.

Before & After: Modern Updates for a Tiny Brooklyn Bathroom
When one couple bought their Clinton Hill co-op in 2014, the space’s one bathroom was old, a little bit dated, and really, really small. Their renovation didn’t change the space’s footprint any, but smart, modern choices mean that their new bathroom has a spacious feel that belies its small size. The transformation of the couple’s entire apartment is documented in a separate Apartment Therapy post, which you can find here.

Before & After: An Awkward Kitchen Gets a New Lease on Life
About to welcome their second child, Bernice and Davison were happy to find an apartment with three bedrooms, so that each kid could have their own space (not always a given in New York City). But they were less excited about the kitchen, a dated space whose awkward layout just really wasn’t working. As you can see from the photos above, the refrigerator was immediately to the left upon entering the kitchen: past that was the sink, tucked awkwardly into a corner.

Before & After: A Tiny Brooklyn Kitchen Opens Up
Brooklyn homeowner Ketrina loved her new condo… but as time went by, she became more and more disillusioned with the tiny, cramped kitchen. The cabinets weren’t properly installed, nothing was level, and whenever the refrigerator opened, it would chip away at the kitchen doorway. To make things worse, water leaks from the apartment above were taking their toll on the walls and cabinets. It was time for a change.

Before & After: A Classic Refresh for a Brooklyn Bathroom
The bathroom in Amy’s Brooklyn Heights condo wasn’t terrible or falling apart. But after living there for a while, she started to notice how the finishes picked by the previous owner weren’t in line with the style of the rest of her home, and the vanity cabinet and countertop extension were making the narrow bathroom feel unnecessarily cramped. So she decided to swap out a few fixtures, and replace the tile, to make her bathroom feel bigger and give it a classic, timeless feel.

Jackie’s Brooklyn Bedroom
Name: Jackie Location: Brooklyn, NY About 8 months ago, I moved from Los Angeles to New York City for a new job. In Los Angeles I was accustomed to having my own space — my own studio apartment, my own car, my own private little bubble of space on the sidewalk — so New York City was a bit of a shock for me. Before & After: A Manhattan Bath Gets a Fresh New Look
When planning their kitchen overhaul, Manhattan homeowners Pallavi and Keyur had originally decided to leave their bathroom — which was original to the house and a little the worse for wear — as it was. But as the project progressed, they realized it was important to them that the style of their bathroom match up to the updated look they were pursuing in the rest of the apartment, and that by leaving all the fixture footprints in place, they could save money on the remodel.

Before & After: Big Changes for a Little Kitchen
When Pallavi and Keyur bought their one-bedroom Murray Hill co-op, it had a couple of pretty common NYC apartment problems: a teeny-tiny kitchen, and a bedroom with nearly non-existent clothes storage. The little sliver of the kitchen that you see in the photo above was all that would fit in the picture — it was really that small. But since there was no way to expand the footprint of the apartment, to make their kitchen bigger, they had to get creative.

You’ve probably seen a lot of bathrooms like this: not great, not terrible, just so-so. First-time Manhattan homeowners Hafeeza and her husband were planning on a remodel of their kitchen, with updates to their bathroom to be made at a later date. Brigitte’s Real Deal Apartment in Brooklyn
Name: Brigitte Location: Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, NY I moved into this space in 2008, so I’ve had a solid 6 years to settle in and make it my own. The look was initially far more minimal, but over time became increasingly dense and layered. I attribute this less to my design sensibility and more to my lack of self-control. 5 New Yorkers Who Made the Most of Seriously Small Apartments

Here are five apartments belonging to real New Yorkers who have solved that problem in creative ways, and managed to squeeze a lot of living out of a little space. The “My Roommate Moved Out of the Bigger Bedroom” Makeover
Project by: Taiyo Location: Brooklyn, New York My roommate moved out of the larger room in my apartment so I took the opportunity and switched rooms. Playing with a blank canvas was both exciting and daunting, as I started accumulating furniture a few weeks before the switch hoping it would all work out in the end. What You Need to Know About Water Towers (It’s Grosser Than You Think)
They’re a familiar scene dotting the city skyline — sleekly conical yet distinctly old-world — but just how much do you know about how water towers work, why we still use them and exactly how safe the tanks where we store our drinking water really are? The municipal water mains of New York City provide enough pressure to lift water roughly six stories up in the air. As turn-of-the-century buildings grew taller and taller, so did the demand for water at higher elevations.

Name: Elizabeth Location: Meatpacking District, New York City, New York My husband and I rent a 3rd floor walk up in the Meatpacking District. We moved from London the week that [Hurricane] Sandy hit and so our apartment search was narrowed to areas not affected by the storm, mainly Midtown and Upper West Side. When we walked around the West Village and Chelsea we fell in love with the area and knew we wanted to live here if we could afford an apartment.

Faye’s Tiny New York Bohemian Studio
Name: Faye Location: New York City, New York My home is decorated very bohemian like. It’s very cozy and tiny! It’s a studio in Manhattan — 200 square feet. Most of my furniture is from Urban Outfitters, the garbage, or hand-me-downs. My favorite item is my rocking chair. I love to read books while sitting on it and I placed it by the window to get natural light while reading. Thanks, Faye! • Interested in sharing your home with Apartment Therapy?

Maria’s 500 Square Foot Studio
Name: Maria Location: Brooklyn I lease a very tiny apartment in Brooklyn. A high ceiling helps add some air and creates an illusion of a larger space. I’ve managed to divide my 500 square foot room into four different zones: entry, bedroom, work & lounge, kitchen. My studio is decorated with flea market and antique finds as well as with accessories from Objects Reartiste. Thanks, Maria! • Interested in sharing your home with Apartment Therapy?
