Every Room in This Quirky Queens Rental Is a Beautiful, Bold Color
Two years ago, full-time interior decorator Ally Doman began running her own business: Doman Decors. “My background is in theater, so I’m the type of person who is constantly finding creative outlets to express myself and tell stories through different lenses. I am relatively new to the interior design world, but I dove head-first these last few years and haven’t looked back,” Ally writes. “I am constantly learning and developing my own personal style while also styling and designing for my clients who inspire and challenge me on a daily basis.” (Clients like this Park Slope resident who hired Ally to redecorate a boring bedroom.)

Ally says that she and her partner, Evan, had been living a “fairly bohemian lifestyle before planting our roots” in this three-bedroom Ridgewood rental apartment. “By ‘bohemian,’ I mean we were always on the go, usually in close quarters with other artists and performers, and leaving the city to travel with tours and shows, which meant we didn’t really put a ton of thought into making our house a proper home,” Ally explains. “Personally, I was hopping from sublet to sublet: I lived in seven apartments in the span of three years, so we both felt it was time to search for a place we could turn into our haven.”
“When we first saw the apartment, it looked outdated and extremely lived in — the previous owners raised, like, 10 kids in the apartment before moving back to Europe,” Ally continues. “Although the home needed some fixing up, we were obsessed with the gorgeous architectural features like built-in cabinets and ornate millwork that had been there since the early 20th century, so that bit of history is still intact and by far my favorite part of the space. We did some renovations, and, as per usual, they took longer than we expected, so for the first month of living in our new home, we could only occupy one room while they finished the other rooms, so we slept in one of the smaller rooms with our mattress on the floor, surrounded by all our belongings with no access to the kitchen and, at times, the bathroom, so we had to shower at the gym and occasionally use our neighbor’s bathroom. Although frustrating at times, it turned out to be semi romantic … lots of pizza in bed!”
