Colton's Nod to Nautical

Colton's Nod to Nautical

Location: Chicago suburbs, Illinois

When I was pregnant with my second son, we moved my older son out of the nursery and into his very own big boy room. I was going to leave the nursery as is, but last minute I decided to re-do the nursery. Therefore, I wanted to create the nursery quickly and on a small budget, since this was the second time around for that room.

I knew I wanted to create a nautical theme. I'm very drawn to the ocean and beach-y interiors. However, since we live in the Midwest, I don't tend to add many beach-y touches to our home. I felt, though, that if I can create a themed room anywhere, it would be the nursery.

To keep the costs down, I left the previous paint color, DIY'd wherever I could (sailboat mobile, customized curtain panels, nursery wall letters), used a lot of thrift shop finds (lithograph prints, paintings, globe, lamp), and shopped IKEA (crib and panels). I also re-used many items from my first sons nursery and shopped other rooms of my house (white rug, bookshelf, baskets, blankets).

Also, this is a really tiny nursery, so we improvised and used two IKEA MALM dressers in the closet as the changing table.

Source List:

  • Yellow Rug:
  • Sundvik crib: IKEA
  • Capiz Chandelier: West Elm
  • Boat mobile: DIY using paper mache boat pattern found at Ann Wood's blog
  • Drape: inspired by Restoration Hardware Canvas Stripe which I DIY'ed using an IKEA MERETE panel
  • World Map Gift Wrap: PaperSource
