Island Retreat on the Finnish Archipelago

Island Retreat on the Finnish Archipelago

Finns take advantage of their extra-long summer days and head out to the country house — often on a small island without electricity or running water. The Mecklin home on Mustaluoto Island west of the city of Turku is a simple summer house with some thoughtful details…

Designed by Huttunen–Lipasti–Pakkanen Architects, Villa Melkin was kept as simple as possible — basic materials (untreated Finnish fir) and basic construction methods. The view and access to the water are paramount. The large deck has a firepit in the middle that can be used in the cool and breezy nights and covered up and used as a dance floor!
