Depending on where you live or the state of your fireplace, you either might not need it or it might not even function. There are a lot of these fireplaces in homes that just serve as a decorations. How about transforming it into something useful? Check out this project, where a fireplace was transformed into an entertainment center.
Alexander from Australia came up with this great idea because his living room was actually quite small. The fireplace was already close up, so he made it into an entertainment unit. He started out by fixing the two Lidingo doors to a white Billy bookcase.
- 3 white IKEA Billy bookcases
- 2 IKEA Lidingo glass panel doors
- Dioder LED lighting pack
- IKEA Tyda Handles
Then, he built an MDF frame using bookcase as a base. The bookcase will fit directly into the frame, and that will fit into the fireplace. It's important to make sure that you've got the right measurements. Otherwise, it won't fit. The finishing touch includes an open shelf to place home theater peripherals, from a DVD player to other components.
Alexander ran the power supply and TV cords through the walls, thanks to the internal sides of the Billy bookcase. He also installed a PVC conduit pipe for power cables so that it had an integrated cable management system. Lastly, the IKEA Dioder LED lights were installed on the inside to give a nice ambient glowing effect.
All in all, it's a great idea and we really like what he did with his fireplace. So if you have got an unused fireplace in your home, you can think about converting it too. Plus, the whole unit looks really good since the HDTV is hanging right above it.
