Would you believe those super-mod speaker stands up there are DIY? It's true. And even better, the project cost less than $25 to make both stands—thanks, of course, to a clever hack that uses a pair of inexpensive IKEA lamp bases.

Do your speakers need stilts? Speaker stands can help your audio system achieve the best balance of sound by placing your speakers at ear level. They also provide an aesthetic platform that helps speakers look more at home on top of a console or flanking a wall-mounted TV.

But you need not shell out $200+ for a nice set. This IKEA hack gives you a solution for less than $25.

Using a pair of LAMPAN lamps from IKEA ($7.99,; available in white, black and red), Polsia in Brooklyn created these mod stands featured on IKEA Hackers.

After popping off the lamp's shade, Polsia safely cut off the power cord and filled each hollow tulip-shaped base with lightweight dry spackle to provide weight and stability for the speakers.

The grand total for two lamps and a 16 ounce tub of spackling? $24.98. Your wallet feels fatter already.
