Piñatas, man. Those were the business at birthday parties when I was a kid. All us youngsters would spend the afternoon playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey or whatever other party game came next, but we'd all keep the corner of our eyes on the themed piñata hanging a few steps away, surely filled with all kinds of sugar and cheap toys.

Piñatas these days are not just for kids. The mere presence of a fringey-fun piñata still creates an instant festive atmosphere for summer parties. If you want to give it more of a grown-up twist, it can be filled with goodies like dark chocolate and mini bottles of booze.

If you have an empty box (or a paper lantern) and a craft store nearby, you're all set to create this fun party piece from scratch. Just check out one of these ideas for creative shapes and themes that work for any summer bash (yes, even a wedding!).
