Dabney's Paint & Pairings: Black, White & Bold Pops of Color

All of my style sleuthing confirmed what I already know: I like basic white rooms. No matter what I do with furniture and decor, the space will always feel bright and clean (even if it's not). With that in mind, I decided not to paint the already white walls in the work room another color. Instead I am merely refreshing the floor. Four years of foot traffic, dog abuse and projects have left it in bad shape. In addition to scuff marks and dog hair, it's also yellowed underneath the one rug in there. Since I'm rearranging the room, the floor soooo needs to be redone. But the walls will remain white.

The thing I'm slightly excited about — no, VERY excited about — is the decor pairings. I am going for bright color!! The rest of our house is on the neutral side, with navys, grays and lots of wood. While I love it, sometimes I just crave BOLD color — aqua and orange and yellow and pink and who knows what else. My issue with those colors is that they make me feel like I have all the sophistication of a three-year-old's wardrobe. So the plan is to ground all the color with some black and hope it brings the collective age of the room up at least a few decades.

I am going to wind up buying lots of large rugs (god help me) but I started with this one from RugsUSA. It was very inexpensive (hello 60% sale!) for an 8 x 10, and it reminds me of Berber rugs I saw in Morocco. It's not crazy bold, due to the off-white background, but there's a lot color-wise to work with. It also works pretty well with my existing furniture and lighting. Fingers crossed that I like it in person, and that the colors aren't all weird and wonky.

The sofa will be reupholstered in an off-white colored fabric (a stain resistant line from Calico Corners). The other patterned fabrics will become throw pillows to scatter about. Metal stools for the work table are in the plan. And then that little thing called artwork.

So, still lots to do and decide upon, but it's feeling good so far.
