These 3 Easy Rituals Will Keep Your Home Neat and Clean on a Daily Basis
Cleaning and organizing your home definitely requires reliable products and tools — but keeping your space pristine is all about your routine. What’s the purpose of a cabinet full of cleaning products or drawers full of expensive organizers if you don’t actually maintain good habits?
Getting into a groove takes time, but if your goal is to feel good and less stressed about being at home, then it’s worth the extra bit of effort. Not sure which rhythms will result in a tidier space for the long-haul? These three high-yield chores, as advised from the pros, will make it happen. And the best part is that they’re easy to do.
Make your bed first thing in the morning.
You probably don’t spend more than your sleeping hours in your bedroom, so making your bed might not seem like a huge priority. According to Ben Soreff, founder of House to Home Organizing, this quick chore is actually one of the most important things you can do for yourself, your bedroom, and your entire home.
For one thing, making your bed prevents you from getting back in it, which means you’ll be more productive. Also, starting your day off with a home-care (and really, self-care) task sets a positive tone, so you may be more likely to make similar decisions until it’s time to sleep again.
Clean and organize as you go.
Once your bed is made, there are a few more high-impact rituals that can help keep your space in order. One of them, says professional organizer Andrea Brame, is keeping up with household needs as they happen. “Think of daily household tasks as cycles,” says Brame. “Where many household messes happen is when a cycle breaks and a step is not fully completed.”
For example, you should ideally empty your clean dishwasher, fold your dry laundry, and sort incoming mail right away. “If at any point one of the steps is left undone, it will cause clutter and extra work for you in the future,” says Brame.
Clean up for 15 minutes before bed.
It’s a whole lot easier to function well when you’re not distracted by everything that needs to be cleaned or put away.
Olivia Parks, owner of Professional Organizer New Orleans, suggests every one of her clients implement a killer nighttime organizing and cleaning routine — and she believes in this advice so much she follows it herself.
“Every night before I go to bed, I make sure all the dishes are done, trash is taken out, and items that were used that day are put back in their homes,” she says. “Although this can sound like a drag, especially after a long day of work, it sets up your next day for success.”
