When we first moved into this apartment we used the same furniture, accessories, etc. from our old apartment. Our old desk was very small (actually it's not even a desk it's a hallway table!) and was very small and cramped. Our cords box (the wooden box on the left) and the scanner took up a considerable amount of space and once we bought a laptop there was just no room left. Not to mention your legs would hit the X-beam under the desk every time you sat down. And while we love this Anthopologie chair it's just not suitable as a computer desk. My fiancé works from home so she needs a space that she can feel comfortable working in all day long.
We took it upon ourselves to open up the space, reorganize everything, redecorate and build a new desk.
First we repainted the wall to a dark gray and switched out the plants. Then I built a new computer desk. I bought the Gerton table top from IKEA, hairpin legs from hairpinlegs.com and got a few angle iron beams from a local mill and put it all together. It took a couple weeks of planning and a full weekend of staining and sanding the tabletop. I painted the legs and steel beams gold and attached a vintage basket underneath the desk to house all of our computer cables and hard drives. Hiding all of our cables is super important to us so we drilled a couple of holes in the table top for all cables from the monitor, laptop and phone dock to feed into.
Next I took an old piece of oak wood that was previously from our old kitchen island and turned them into our new shelves. The old white shelf became our new scanner shelf. I painted all of the shelf hardware gold.
