Name: Deana & Nadim
Location: Los Feliz, CA
Type: 1 bedroom duplex, rental
Why I use color:
Transplanted from the east coast, our house in Philadelphia was all white - and it worked really well. Once we hit Southern California with it's lush vegetation, killer sunsets, and "colorful" characters, we had to surround ourselves with rich, daring colors. Our house inside feels as vibrant and varied as the city does outside.
2 Good color tips:
1. Stay away from being too matchy-matchy. A house with diversity, that tells a story and draws the eye around the room, is always more interesting and important-feeling. Take a risk with color selection...and don't be afraid to try low & no-VOC (eco-friendly) paints. They're available everywhere and provide great coverage!
2. Highlight your color by mixing in pieces with varied metallic and mirrored finishes (mix chrome, brass, & bronze). Not only will they stand out against both bold and subtle colors, but they'll reflect light and play off walls and textiles.
2 good color resources:
1. Vintage wallpapers and fabrics are great ways to discover a new palette. You're sure to find unexpected color combinations that will inspire you to take a more daring direction.
2. Everyone's saying it and i totally agree - nature, nature, nature...plants, animals, water, etc. you can find the richest, most amazing colors in & around your home. I could do an entire house based on the colors of my siamese cat.
