A clean home is a happy home. I think about this statement a lot — especially as a cleaning editor. Allow me to reintroduce myself. I know that the act of cleaning — from the chores you do every day to the ones done seasonally — goes beyond cleanliness. It’s how you care for your home, and in turn yourself. And when you declutter, it’s not just the usual suspects that pile up, such as worn-out clothes or boxes upon boxes. Sometimes, you’re parting ways with the emotional memories that cling to the physical items of your spaces, like the T-shirt from my college newspaper days that I never wear but keep tucked away in a box or the overflowing bin of handwritten notes, letters, cards, and post-its from people — old friends, coworkers, loved ones — that have at one point touched my life.

Decluttering is often necessary as it allows you time to check in on your items and say goodbye to things that take up much-needed space (and time) or no longer bring joy into your life. Sometimes the toughest part of the decluttering process is knowing how and where to start. But, once you build momentum, you can tackle almost anything. 

Luckily, you don’t have to do it alone. Apartment Therapy’s annual Decluttering Cure begins in just a few weeks — and it’s free to join in on the fun! What is the Decluttering Cure?

The Decluttering Cure is a free 14-day program designed to help our readers achieve a lighter and leaner home. Starting Monday, Sept. 19, participants will receive a daily assignment in their inbox: each one focused on a decluttering task that will bring you one step closer to a tidier home. 

The best part? We’re all in this together. I’ll be the one to guide you through each daily task and I’ve invited some very special guests to help. Look out for our “guest cure-ators” to join in on the fun and share their helpful tips and tricks with you along the way. 

Here’s a sneak peek at our lineup of special guest experts for this year’s program: 

  • Vaishali Sahni is a professional home organizer who teaches people how to declutter, clean, and organize their homes with step-by-step instructions and implementation systems.
  • Shira Gill is a globally recognized author and organizing expert with signature programs to help you declutter your home.
  • Pia Thompson, who is an organizing pro, will serve as your “joy finder,” helping you discover and fill your home with things that spark joy.
  • Emi Louie is a master KonMari consultant and professional organizer that’ll assist you in breaking free from “physical clutter and the emotional weight that comes with it.”
  • Tyler Moore, aka The Tidy Dad, started his “tidying journey” in early 2018 and has since shared with the world his quest for a cleaner, simpler home.
  • Apartment Therapy’s founder and CEO Maxwell Ryan, who created the Cure, will close things out by helping you celebrate your wins.

How do I join?

Joining this free program is easy! All you need to do is sign up with your email in the box at the bottom of this page or jump on this signup page. You’ll start receiving those daily assignments in your inbox, so you can put them on your calendar and plan how you’ll get that day’s task done.

What can I expect?

A tidier home in just two weeks. Isn’t that great? We start our 14-day journey with a tried-and-true method: setting up your three outboxes. We also set ourselves up for success by establishing guiding principles and rules. We then move into more refined projects, like spending some time decluttering the closet and redoing a drawer (or two). 

We take a moment to understand our most challenging clutter spots, like ones that are sentimental or have just become unruly over time. It’s important to create better habits and strategies — and our guest curators are here to help share their insights with you. Then, we finish the program by celebrating our wins and we encourage you to bring someone into your home to show off what you’ve accomplished. 

Each daily assignment will take 15 to 45 minutes and follow one after the other. But, you decide when and how long you need to complete it. If you need to skip a day, spend extra time in one area, or are having trouble letting go of something — that’s OK. The Decluttering Cure process is one that you create and apply to your home.
