I’m in the camp that built-in shelving can be both a blessing and a curse. The extra storage space and freedom to get a little creative with decor can be a huge perk, but actually going about styling all of those shelves so that they look pretty, and not junky, can be a bit of a challenge.

While styling my own built-ins (after consulting tutorial after tutorial on Pinterest), I found it helpful to stock up on a few accent pieces that would add some life and color to each shelf. After all, my goal was to make my collection of novels and coffee table books look less library-like and more living room-friendly, but that meant breaking up the rows of thick spines with a few vases, jars, and figurines.

Many of our favorite online stores are full of beautiful accents that would look right at home on any open shelf and are the perfect companion for your books and photos. Happy styling!
