Here at Apartment Therapy, we’re big fans of Man Repeller, the online destination for smart, quirky fashion and smart, addictive writing about life, culture, and everything else. Last year, founder Leandra Medine partnered with Decorist to redesign her NYC home — and this year, she worked with Decorist designer Chloe Redmond Warner to transform Man Repeller’s New York offices.

In the interior design world, trends come and go faster than you can say, “mid-century modern”—but you can bet they’ll eventually make a comeback.Take cane furniture, for example. Wickered furniture has been around since ancient Egyptian civilizations, and caning has been having small resurgences since the 1600s (psst… you can check its entire history here). But lately I’ve been seeing some new shapes that I’m really excited about — new styles (or reloads of old styles) that are just as versatile, and present a fresh new direction for your wardrobe. If my head weren’t screwed on, I’d probably regularly leave it in one of the home decor aisles at Target. If I didn’t have a wall calendar in my office, I absolutely would have no idea what day it was. Sure I can look at my iPhone, on the two calendars on my laptop, check my watch (though that’s always a few days off), but nothing beats the simplicity of glancing over to my wall and realizing it’s Friday (woo hoo!).

I work from home as a freelance writer/editor in a room that once was my formal dining room, which I transitioned into an office, as I wasn’t content with sitting at my kitchen island on my laptop for hours on end every day. When tackling the remodel of this Toronto home, architects Andrew Hill and Jennifer Kudlats of StudioAC had a few important missions: create an open plan that revolved around a singular grounding aesthetic element (in this case a large plywood wall that brings together the entry, kitchen, living and dining rooms) and, find a spot for the family pet, Rusty, to call home. Rusty’s ingenious built-in den is why we’re here today. Let’s take a look.

Architect David Guerra designed this concrete and glass oasis for clients in Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil. Located on a hillside with stunning views, the ground floor of the home is designed with sliding glass doors to create a sense of unity with nature.

Picking office furniture is generally a no frills, utilitarian endeavor. Grab some desks, chairs, file cabinets, conference tables and call it a day. Whoever was in charge of that task for the New York Times, though, decided to spice up the workspace with some modern pieces—so modern, in fact, that they’re baffling the staff.

It was a gray Friday afternoon, but Studio—a café and restaurant tucked inside the recently opened Freehand New York—felt alive. I was sitting across from the person who helped to create that vibe through a surprising vehicle—plants. They filled the corners, shelves, and the area between the tables, bringing each space very much to life. And, it turns out, the man responsible for their being is also behind the plants at a host of New York City’s hottest restaurants.

Personal well-being aside, sitting for prolonged periods can also effect performance at work due to low concentration and productivity (don’t lie…we know you’ve considered a George Costanza under-the-desk nap before).

99.9% of homes have these particularly annoying things that are both a physical nuisance, and also visually drag our living spaces down. The design world has lost a legend. On Friday, Florence Knoll Bassett passed away at the age of 101 in Florida. An architect, designer, and proponent of humanized modernism, she changed the way we work, and produced some of the 20th century’s most iconic furniture pieces. I was pretty proud of myself for turning the hallway of my tiny New York apartment into a closet. In need of an extra space for work and hosting family, architect Ulrika Saar designed this 312 square foot granny flat on her property. Built with Russ Davis of Avalon Constructions, the house is nestled into Saar’s backyard in Sydney, Australia. The team managed to pack a ton of stuff into a small amount of space. Generally speaking, when building in a small space, something always has to give — and in an populated area, most often the “give” is in sacrificing outdoor spaces, especially gardens. But one Beijing- and Austria-based design duo has found a genius solution in the plans for this “Yin & Yang House” currently being built in central Germany.

Amazon’s latest corporate office building, The Spheres in Seattle, features 40,000 plants, organic architecture inspired by botanical design, and a “biophilic” environment for both Amazon employees and the general public. And if it works out well, just might have the mega-retailer influencing the design of workplaces everywhere.

With the holidays upon us, you might be dreaming of a relaxing winter getaway. Look no further than Sweden’s ICEHOTEL. The famous hotel, which sits 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in the village of Jukkasjarv by the Torne River, is open once again. Each year since 1989, the hotel built is anew for the winter season (although last year the hotel did add a more permanent sister hotel next door) and it is an art and design lover’s dream.

Portugal based architecture firm depA has wonderfully mastered the art of hiding in plain sight with the design of its reflective pavilion. The creatively camouflaged building is situated lakeside in Serralves Park, where it shares space with The Museum, the country’s leading contemporary art museum designed by Portuguese award-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.

In these unpredictable times, Pantone delivered at least one certainty we can hold onto for 2018: their much-anticipated Color of the Year. And like it or not, the pick is Ultra Violet—an intense, bold shade of purple. At face value, the choice might seem like merely a design one that will influence everything from throw pillows to bridesmaid dresses in the coming year. But over time, these selections have come to take on a bit of a deeper meaning.

I recently made the switch to an adjustable standing desk in my office, and it has made a world of difference. That said, I soon realized that my regular desk chair just wasn’t going to cut it anymore. With a more active desk I needed a more active seating option — and it turns out that the medical community agrees. Active seating — specifically ergonomic stools — helps to strengthen core and back muscles, while allowing the spine to achieve its natural curve.

You may have heard that Amazon is sending cities into a tizzy by announcing that they’re hunting for a place to open a second headquarters outside of Seattle, which will be dubbed HQ2. They’ve got a lot of work cut out for them on making that big move, so we thought we’d decorate the new digs for them—with stuff from Amazon, of course.

Just like any place where you spend a lot of time, your home office can easily get overrun by daily minutiae—think: sticky notes, to-do lists, and piles of printouts—that make it difficult to concentrate. That’s why it’s important to create a dedicated workspace that not only keeps you organized, but also helps you stay positive and focused throughout your day, too. Those who are short on space or privacy (i.e. roommates) needn’t look further than the room you sleep in for home workspace, and while writing emails may not be high on your list of favorite bedroom activities, these nine bedroom office nooks are so good they’ll have you reducing your commute time in big way.

If you are nervous or unsure about adding color into your home, consider using 60-30-10 color rule when planning your next room makeover. The 60-30-10 rule is a very easy-to-follow approach that designers often use to create well-balanced rooms using color. This concept follows the classic rule of three (which is also used in everything from marketing, to floral arrangements, to writing). In this case, three color families are used to add balance and depth to a room.

I know I’m not alone in the intensely pleasurable emotions I feel when opening a door or drawer and finding a perfectly lined-up, organized set of containers. It’s a joy matched only by the excitement of seeing an unattractive (but useful) home element smoothly reveal itself from its hiding spot…and then slide right back out of view. Sure, this post has some organizing and camouflaging ideas, but it’s also unabashedly full of some moments of sweet and simple zen.

I know it’s still August, but Yankee Candle released their new scents for fall, and now I’m suddenly wearing a sweater. Also a perfectly cozy oversized scarf. By the way, where did this pumpkin spice latte come from? It’s autumnally delicious. After a whiff of this candle, I’m the kind of person who has their shit (and shared Google calendars) together enough to organize an early season apple picking excursion. The reward?

When we think of staying in a cabin, we tend to envision a cozy hideaway in the woods situated far away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life. But there’s an unusual form—definitely not your idea of the traditional log house—in east London that’s hiding in plain sight on top of a row of artists’ studios, warehouses and event spaces.
