Desk Alternatives for Small Space Living

We know the importance of having a good desk to work on at home. However, if your home just doesn't allow the space for a desk in your room (and some of us are in that situation) there are other alternatives to set up little workstations in small spaces. Here are a couple desk alternatives we use at Unplggd.

Laptop Stand: For small bedrooms, we have found a laptop stand to be the best affordable, space saving solution for a desk, and it's quite comfortable too. If you have a good chair, just roll up a laptop stand to it and get working. A stand also works as a nice setup to watch shows on your computer while relaxed in bed or on a couch. There are lots of different options and materials to consider, from an ergonomic vented laptop table to an elegant wood finish table.

Cushtop: Another one of our favorites is a Cushtop. Belkin has a good Cushtop we use when we're working on our laptops where a table isn't available. There's a convenient storage pocket to store your charger or other accessories while you work. You can use either side of the Cushtop depending on the size of your laptop.

If you don't spend hours working at home, but do like to spend a Sunday morning in bed browsing or doing some light catch-up, the Bravo bed table is a well-designed alternative. It is made of a sheet of aluminum and is 3 millimeters thick. It was designed specifically for the bed browsers with a slope on the side for pencils, a coffee cup or your mouse.

Floating desk: Perhaps you can't fit a desk inside your room, but have extra space wall space in the living room. This would be an ideal situation to get a wall or floating desk. We came across the S01 desk by a Germany-based design studio that we admire and would be perfect for a small space solution. Just pull the desk down when you want to get some work done, and fold it up after you're finished. There are little storage areas in the back of the desk to store tech accessories, battery chargers or hard drives.

The Ledge floating desk by urbancase is also one of our all-time favorites. There's a hidden cord storage area and is made of plywood with a beautiful walnut top.
