Soothing hues will continue to be big next year, according to experts and forecasters. In fact, there’s already a strong contender for color of the year come 2023. According to the trend predictors at WGSN and the color and textile experts at Coloro, 2023’s Color of the Year will be Digital Lavender, a serene hue that evokes tranquility and healing. While it might seem premature to resolve a color of the year two years in advance, the experts noted that Digital Lavender has already fostered quite an online presence — and it’s only a matter of time before it manifests in physical spaces.

Digital Lavender also taps into existing trends that signal a preference for soothing, calming hues, as outlined in other color prediction forecasts from the last several months. Minwax hailed Vintage Blue as their Color of 2021, a shade that embodies calmness and resilience, while Behr cited Canyon Dusk as their Color of 2021, a warm terracotta shade with centering capabilities that prioritize comfort. Enter: Digital Lavender, a color chosen for a world that will “be waking up and adjusting after a long period of restriction and uncertainty,” per the experts, connecting to feelings of optimism, stability, and balance.

“As consumers find solace and comfort inhabiting the virtual space, the influence [distorts] the boundaries between our online and offline existence,” Joanne Thomas, head of content at Coloro, told Cosmetics Business. “Digital Lavender signifies that stability, serenity, and digital escapism that so many of us have built into our recuperative rituals to both protect and improve our mental health in challenging times.”

With Digital Lavender hailed as the color of 2023, Coloro and WGSN also predicted that four other key colors will dominate the spring and summer season of that particular year: Luscious Red, Sundial, Tranquil Blue, and Verdigris.
