Good News: It Sounds Like The Disney Vault Is Going Away
Disney fans, rejoice: The Disney Vault might be coming to an end, and what’s taking its place is going to be much better. CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, recently announced that Disney‘s forthcoming streaming service, dubbed Disney+, will “house the entire Disney motion picture library.” Whoa.
That’s big news for fans of streaming, which, let’s face it, that’s just about all of us these days. Due to this pending change, the Vault is set to wholly dissipate. Although the company hasn’t released an exact launch date for the streaming service, it’s expected to open its doors to the internet in the fall of 2019.
If you’re unsure of what the Disney Vault even is, you’re not alone. In a nutshell, Disney has been making its film creations available for limited-time only purchase. Once that window of availability closes, the titles are then sent to the Disney Vault, where they remain on lockdown for years. The strategy was meant to incentivize fans to buy DVDs while they could, but as DVDs and other media of yesteryear fall out of favor, Disney is making adjustments.
If you do have all your IRL collections, don’t fret. Those limited release discs are likely to become even more rare as the digital streaming service takes the helm of Disney’s media delivery. And that’s a boon if you ever want to resell them.
With that said, we—like so many others— didn’t love the gimmicks of the Vault, and we’re excited to be able to soon curl up on the couch and watch whatever Disney production we want, whenever we want.
