DIY an Indoor Zen Garden

Has summer passed you by but you're not ready to let go? If, like me, you suffer from the end of summer blues, this simple DIY might help you through the bleak days of winter. It would also be an inexpensive way to accessorize your beachy chic dorm room, while adding a bit of an unexpected conversation piece.

Zen gardens found in nature are havens for contemplation and reflection. So why not create a constantly changing work of art in your home that will also help calm and relax your mind? The folks over at the Free People blog have come up with a DIY to create beautiful scenes to soothe the spirit with this tabletop garden.

Using a glass container for the base, sand, rocks, and a miniature wooden rake made from coffee stirrers, this might be one of the cutest zen gardens I've ever seen! They took the ordinary Zen garden up a notch by adding metallic paint and crocheted doilies to otherwise ordinary smooth river pebbles. I can also envision incorporating an air plant or cactus into this visually pleasing centerpiece.

The complete set of instructions can be found at the Free People blog.
