A couple of years ago for my sister's wedding my family and I made tons of cake stands using salvaged plates and wine glasses. The result was beautiful and perfectly matched her event. Then we came across this neat tutorial on how to make cake stands using table legs and a few common building supplies.
All that's required for this fun project are a few interesting wooden table legs (used for the pedestal section of the stand), squares of plywood and pine wood, decorative wood trim, paint and then standard tools including sandpaper, a saw, and a drill. These particular stands were sized to fit specific plates and bowls, but the style and size can be adjusted completely based on your tastes and needs.
I love this idea because of number of styles you can make, and because the materials are all wood the pieces can be easily painted... and as shown in the photos, painted again to match any event.
