Ocular Oddity

Inspired by the Surrealists’ fascination with eyes, we’ve created a larger-than-life eyeball headpiece out of standard crafts-store supplies: a styrofoam ball, felt, cardstock, and hot glue. The sky’s the limit to what you can create but here are some great, doable ideas to get you started. Ship: Construct a lightweight balsa wood ship, spritz it with some matte spray paint, then let it set sail on Halloween night. For a costume that will last all evening, use wood glue to hold the ship together and attach to a fascinator base with both hot glue and sturdy wire.

Octopus: Give a lifelike foam octopus some extra sparkle with clear glue and a sprinkling of glitter. The tentacles can be bent any which way, so you can let them dangle over your face or pull them up to look like unruly hair.

Succulent Garden: Buy as much greenery as you can, being sure to vary the sizes and shapes. Arrange for the plants to cascade over one side of your face. For some extra drama and movement, add a few sculptural branches!
