I may be biased because I loathe mine, but I think spice cabinets have to be one of the most problematic areas in a kitchen. No matter what I do, I can’t find a good way to organize my spices and display them in an aesthetically pleasing way. It’s not to say that people don’t get creative — a hidden spice storage solution even caused quite a stir on the internet last year.

And it’s not all my deep, narrow cabinet’s fault — I could be better about keeping the spices orderly. However, I’m guilty of chucking them back into their dark, sad hiding spot whenever I rush to clean the kitchen or free up countertop space. (And then I grumble about how chaotic the cabinet is the next time I open it.)

This got me thinking: I’m always super organized when expecting guests. So maybe if people could open my cabinets or it looked more like an art display, I’d keep it looking better. And then I saw the gorgeous spice cabinet in Amanda Oleri and Jason Staebler’s mid-century modern Nashville home

Amanda and Jason took time to design, build, and install basically everything during their kitchen remodel. One of the most incredible elements of the new space is the chic DIY spice cabinet. They pulled inspiration from another project and used scrap wood, so it was a low-lift all around.

“Everybody loves our built-in spice cabinet! We had previously done an arched inset shelf in our bathroom and fell in love with the archway design, so we decided to carry that detail into the kitchen,” Amanda shared at the time of the tour. “One day, we were brainstorming and came up with the idea for this charming little spice rack. It was such a sweet and simple detail to execute.”

It’s one of the first stops people make when they walk into Amanda and Jason’s kitchen, so that’s likely a good incentive to keep it organized. Seven shelves hold several spices, and being just a few steps from the stove, it’s probably easy to select one while in the flurry of cooking. Besides being functional, it’s also charming and somehow elevates spices, making them look like fancy beauty products.

So much thought and effort went into designing Amanda and Jason’s kitchen, and the spice cabinet is just one special part of the overall space. These sentimental touches have made the room one of the favorite hangout spots in the home.

“We love everything about the kitchen and spend so much time in it! Every detail was designed and built by us, making it a true reflection of our passion and creativity,” Amanda said at the time of the tour. “It’s the hub of the house and where everyone gravitates when we have guests over. From cooking together to sharing meals and conversations, the kitchen is the heart of our home.”
