Some Clever DIYs Turn a $1 Plastic Basket into a Dreamy Boho-Style Planter
We’re going mad for makeovers this month! From home makeovers to smart DIYs to brackets, check out all of our Makeover Madness content here.
Here at Apartment Therapy, we believe you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have something that looks truly high end. That’s why we love poking around the dollar store, where there are plenty of finds that can be customized with a style that feels like a million bucks. So as the final part of our Makeover Madness Month, we knew we wanted to send a plain dollar store find in for an upgrade. Again, here’s how the challenge went: For every one of our five DIYers, we mailed a surprise item and a $50 gift card to cover supplies. From there, we let them run wild: They could do anything they wanted (anything! seriously!), as long as it fit in our budget and used the original item. Here we go—it’s the final installment of Megan’s Mystery Makeover!
Our first episode showed off a doormat makeover from Chelsea Foy of Lovely Indeed; next, we saw Ashley Basnight of Handmade Haven give a plain wood IKEA stool a luxe upgrade and Meegan Buschor of Mia Interiors turn a faux-mercury glass bowl into a chic, rustic-meets-minimalist display piece. Last week, Ursula Carmona of Home Made by Carmona transformed a thrift store clock into a chic, modern propagation station.
For our final week, we’re checking in with Wendy Lau of The Kwendy Home. For her mystery item, we chose a bright blue plastic basket from our local dollar store. Price, as you might guess, was just $1. Plant-lover Wendy knew she wanted to turn this into a home for greenery, so she shopped for supplies at the home improvement store and the dollar store.
Some clever DIYing turned plain-looking supplies into a sublime boho-inspired result for less than $25 total. Want to see how it looks? Watch the video above!
