Just going to get this out of the way at the top of the post: if you're a big sports fan, you may want to skip over this one and go throw a pigskin around in the front yard for awhile. There. Now that I've alienated roughly 107 million Americans, let's get down to brass tacks —there's a super affordable TV service that will save you money and free you from the tyranny of televised sports.

Earlier this month, Philo launched its TV streaming service that offers access to 36 channels for $16 a month or 46 channels for $20. By cutting out costly sports packages, Philo is able to bring a wide variety of cable offerings to the masses. The flip side to the bargain basement prices is that the news companies that owned many of those sports packages, like FOX News and CNN, aren't part of the deal. But if you're happy getting your news from the paper or internet, Philo is a pretty great deal.

The interface is easy to use, there's 30 day DVR and there are plans to make the platform more social (like syncing up to the exact same spot in an episode as a long distance friend) in 2018. Right now, it's compatible with Roku, iOS, Android Chrome, and Web, and will most likely expand to AppleTV and FireTV after a few months.

The main package channels include:

  • A&E
  • AMC
  • Animal Planet
  • AXS TV
  • BBC America
  • BBC World News
  • BET
  • Cheddar
  • CMT
  • Comedy Central
  • Discovery Channel
  • DIY
  • Food Network
  • FYI
  • GSN
  • HGTV
  • History
  • IFC
  • ID
  • Lifetime
  • Lifetime Movies
  • MTV
  • MTV2
  • Nickelodeon
  • Nick Jr.
  • OWN
  • Science
  • Spike
  • Sundance Channel
  • TeenNick
  • TLC
  • Travel Channel
  • TV Land
  • Velocity
  • VH1
  • Viceland
  • We TV

So if you're more inclined to watch Atlanta over the Atlanta Falcons, Philo might be just what you need.
