The front door of my apartment locks automatically when it closes so I am hyper-focused on never leaving the house without my keys. I guess you could say once bitten, twice shy.
Years ago, in a previous apartment with a door that also locked on its own, I stepped out of my apartment and as soon as the door slammed closed behind me that I realized my mistake. Of course, I jiggled the handle a few times but I knew the truth immediately. I was locked out. The worst part? I was in stocking feet, I had a pie in the oven, and I was expecting guests in about an hour!
After that experience I vowed to never lock myself out again. To help with this, I now keep my keys in an obvious spot by the front door. Hanging the keys on the same hook where I hang my bag, in direct view from the front door, has kept me from making that mistake again.
Of course, this may not be as much of a concern for someone who lives in a house or apartment with a door that doesn't lock on its own. Still, losing or forgetting your keys can be a pain in the neck, especially when running late.
Do you have a specific place where you keep your keys?
